hey guys
looking at buying a late 4.8 patrol auto and getting a ute conversion done.
my question is.
I need a vehicle to tow between 2 and 3 tonnes several times weekly and my colorado td is strugging.
I'd get a 4.5 td 79 series but need twin cab so thats out and no auto in those.
are there any issues with the 4.8 patrol autos and towing large load??
do the handle LPG ok ??
any advice is welcome
cheers andrew

Go a LPG injection system if your gonna do it.
The TB48's are a tough reliable engine.
Only downside is, they have a drinking problem with fuel.

if its auto you want and you are towing large loads it will definitly need a bigger auto cooler. that and try to tow in 4th as much as possible, 5th is known to be a bit of a weak gear when loaded up

If vehicle is used mainly for heavy towing i personaly would not put it on LPG injected or not, as the valves will burn out due to the heat created when towing on LPG. on petrol it will go forever tho, its a very costly operation to do a cylinder head on these engines ($3500 >) and the valve clearances require checking and adjustment at least every 20,000km when used under loads. a workshop will charge btwn 200-600 dollars for this depending on how many shims it needs to get the right clearance. it all adds up in the end - also the late ones dont have an aux fuel tank so another petrol tank will need to be fitted as the main is taken away when the LPG tank is fitted ..
