Hilux Gearbox Questions

I own a 1982 Hilux with a 2.2L Diesel engine with the 4 Speed gearbox but I have been looking to convert it to a 5 speed.

I have just found a ad for a 5 speed gearbox from a 1982 Hilux but it's off a petrol motor.

My question is will the 5 speed bolt straight onto my engine without any modifications. I know if I got a 5 speed from a LN106 that I would have to modify the crossmember mounts but since this is from a 82 as well, I wouldn't think that I would have to modify the mounts?

Also I didn't think that LN46's came out with a 5 speed unless the petrol engines had one or would it be a different model box?

Thanks in advance :D

I also have an LN46 and I would also like a 5 speed gearbox, but I'm pretty sure petrol and diesel boxes are different. If you can, have a look on th ID plate and see what numkber the gearboxes are.

You can make the 4 speed diesel box into a 5 speed, I think it needs a few different parts, but I'm not sure what they come out of, I think Hiace vans of the same era have 5 speed boxes you can use parts from.

If you find something common you can use, please post it up so I can get one as well.

Jeez this is going to stretch the memory.

There is a 5spd gearbox for these ,think it is a L52 .
You can convert your 4spd box to 5 if you have the parts.
I did have them somewhere I'll have a look.
From memory the hiace vans came out with the 5spd box but it was columm shift.
You may find that the G52 5th gear components would work as I know that alot of the other internals are interchangable.
I even remeber using L45,L52 and G52 syncro rings and sleeves in a landcruiser box once.
The main difference between the G and L boxs is the case.
And from memory its only the shift mechanism that is specific to the L52 box.
