80 series turbo issues

Post by TWITCHIN »

people i have a 92 80 series with a 1HD-T. The turbo started making a howling noise the other day goin to work,
. i noticed a howling sound coming from the turbo under load and at the same time i loose all boost.......but it then creates boost again and all power comes back and the noise dissapears. WTF is happenin, i felt the compressor wheel for bearing movement etc but it is fine. this noise comes and goes which makes me think the waste gate is getting pinched/jamed during operation etc:?. Has anyone else had this problem before.....all info is appreciated.

cheers Dylan

sounds like you could have a boost leak. check the hose from compressor to crossover pipe and check the gasket where the cross over pipes mounts to the manifold.

x2 on the boost leak.

though check the turbo carefully for shaft play. I had the turbo on my 1hd-t explode due to exessive shaft play, the turbo disintegrated and bits went through the engine and killed it too.
mine had started making a howling noise occasionally then more frequently as boost reached its peak, but it wasn't losing boost.

sounds like your wastegate is cracking open before its spose to.
Check your linkage and actuator
Good luck !

It could possibly be sucking the inlet hose in mate, a boost leak doesnt come and go and wastegates either work or they dont,

The noise to be concerned about is the out of balance scream or whistle that they can develop. Then it can be catastrophic like was mentioned. This comes louder with boost so its not your problem.

I did have a leak once that would only show after a certain amout of psi was in the system and that made a similar noise

my truck still feels like its not getting full boost supply but gauage shows 12psi so play it as it lays i spose. will see what it is after i get it back and ill let yas know for futher reference.

This is probably a better Reco/exchange setup than what MTQ can offer.
