2wd 80 series - front shaft spinning help.

First of all I tried search but either there's nothing there or I am useless at using it.

Ok so got a 80 series which has had a part time kit in it now for over a year. During original install I broke the rear cover if the transfer case. Today I replaced it with a good rear cover and yay no transfer oil leaks so far. Unfortunatly I am getting this sound kinda like a metal washer vibrating around. I know no bolts are loose so the whole washer thing is out the window.

The only thing I can come up with is that the front tailshaft is moving in 2wd as it only does it when coasting / decelerating. ( yet to be confirmed ). Only the back cover has been changed so no moving parts apart from a spline which has to be seated otherwise cover would not have gone on and bearing for part that rear driveshaft bolts on.

Will get visual confirmation tomorrow when its light and if it is will further confirm by removing front shaft.

What I would like to know is this normal. It was drained obviously and was sitting for a number of hours without oil could it be that it just needs to work the oil through abit more ( considering I've already done over 50km) or is there something more sinister. Transfer oil was fairly low when we drained it (maybe 200ml). This has happened once before with front tailshaft moving on its own accord when transfer ran low on oil after going to stockton for the day.

And yes my front shaft is almost completely stuffed but as I can't afford to buy a good one ill have to work on this problem first.

If its a case of low lubrication level what would be the best way to get oil worked up there quickly I can run the car in low range 2wd as I can disable the centre diff lock. Driving the car at speeds abouve 20km/h with 4wd engaged is unbearable.

What oil did you use. I have heard similar stories when people use a thin oil that they have noises coming from the transfer case.

Mobil agrifluid 424. Dad runs the same in his 75. Maybe something thicker in the transfer you think

Just tried to get confirmation of driveshaft but can't see it as I am moving too fast when it happens and can't get bolts undone. Will try again Sunday still looking for ideas. With hubs locked in 4x4 itbgoes away hubs unlocked but in 4wd its still there. There was an earth strap on the outer case that couldn't be put back on going to rear cover of transfer would this make a difference.

Yeah taped the front one isn't that but will check the others tomorrow / Sunday. As an update each time I put the car into 4wd the sound changes slightly would the pressed bearing in the outercase make this sort of noise. Or is it possible the centre diff lock isn't fully disengaging. There's really nothing major we changed apart from that bearing.

I know the transfer I got it off has been off a car now for maybe 2 years and 4wd hasn't been used on mine for maybe 6 months to a year only put it in 4wd the other day just after transfer was done to make sure it all worked.

How did you fix em as my front one definatly is loose but has never posed a problem before.

Interesting side note noise had changed to a rapid clicking only on accelerating coasting and deceleration are quiet now?. Dependent on revs doesn't do it in neutral but will in any other gear.

Mate try an see if you can hook that earth back up as it could just not be disengaging fully. I tried to look for it in my workshop manual but it wasn't in there.

Yeah got the shits with it so took it to the local 4wd mechanic. Apart from finding out the rear pads are down to metal and the rear tailshaft was about to fall off the diff (bolts had come loose), turns out the bearing in the outer case has play so replace that and hopefully all good. Noise is definatly quieter now tailshaft is tight so good chance its all solved. Only does noise under load and definatly no spinning of front shaft.

Just a quick note. I'd definitely run thicker oil than agri 424 in your transfer. Should be using an 80w-90 or similar.

thats what they tell me but after about 3 months of searching the most common theory is that cruiser gearboxes and transfers actually like the thinner oil but you have to run a anti-friction additive which the agrifluid 424 already has in it plus i have added another antifriction additive on top of that.

same way dad has been running his 75 series for about 3 years now. engine, gearbox and transfer have over 400,000km on it and has done 2 trips around aus. dam thing shifts better than anything ive ever driven, (including a 2008 cruiser). And yes i am sure gearbox and transfer have those km on them we know the history of the car from new.
