Navman Qube - vehicle GPS tracking device in car I bought!

So I just bought a HZJ80 Tojo 80 Series Landcruiser. The bloke that owned it was a builder who had a fleet of 4 x 80 series his staff all drove. Anyway, yesterday while I was running the wires for my UHF behind the glove box I noticed a new-ish looking control box. Turns out after reading it, it is a "Navman Qube" vehicle GPS tracking device.

After googling it, it appears these things are worth a bit of cash (almost $2k from Olbis http://www.olbis.com.au/ap_template/sub ... acking.asp" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; )... My question for the masses is - is this thing worth anything to someone? If I pull it all out and whack it on ebay will I get something for it?

You can get similar devices for 60 bucks. My worry would be previous owner could be tracking car so I suggest disconnecting it anyways till you find out how to change its settings.

The Qube by itself really isn't much use as it needs the end user software to be able to show where and what the vehicle has been doing and that is only available through Navman Wireless whose head office is based in Sydney, although there are dealers in all states, Oblis is one of them in Brisbane. They are a good system, but very big brotherish. It should be hard wired to the ignition of the vehicle so vehicles can be tracked every time the ignition is turned on/off. It also acturately records speed plus many other things. This is not your basic consumer level product, its more directed at businesses - the website is: http://www.navmanwireless.com.au/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; If it is still fully installed, it should have an aerial somewhere - disconnect or block the signal and that will stop it transmitting the information that allows it to be tracked.

I would suggest getting in contact with the bloke you bought the car off to check its not still under contract, he may have forgotten to remove it prior to sale.

Thanks for the PM Hobie - I've put it on ebay and had a few questions about it so if I can get $100 for it I'm cheering :)

We have these in all our work cars. We dont actually own the units, they are owned by the company that supplied them. When we terminate contract they come and remove all the units.

might not actually be yours to sell Delux, and might get you in some poo if you sell it.

I don't believe you could be prosecuted for selling it unless you have been told not to BUT, I think ringing the previous owner and asking would be a good idea. For $100 worth it might be better karma to hand it back.

Interesting point. Arguably, previous 80s owner didn't have the rights to sell it, but (from dim recollection) it's a bit of a grey area as to what happens if Delux sells it.

He bought the vehicle in good faith, broke no laws in the purchase, black box came with it. Even if previous owner had "stolen" it, Delux didn't knowingly receive stolen goods, and could legitimately sell them on quite innocently - I don't think the law could "reverse" that sale under those circumstances.

However, once Delux becomes aware that there may be a question over ownership, subsequent sale could be viewed differently by the law, as the "innocence" of the sale is gone.

Karma-wise, offering it back is probably the safest path.

Legally, if Delux sold it before anybody questioned his rights to it, I'm not sure the sale could be "undone" in court. If he hasn't sold it yet, I would suggest he checks before doing anything more.

But I'm an engineer, not a lawyer, and my legal opinion is worth what you've all paid for it. :P

Thanks for all the advice peeps..

So I rang Olbis and had a chat with the bloke there, turns out these were purchased by the previous owner (you can either hire or purchase), so I guess it is mine to sell. Problem is, Navman has said they won't be reactivating these once they are not brand new - i.e. if you buy them second hand you'd be buying them for parts and nothing more.

Anyway, its now on ebay for $50 - I guess we'll see if anyone is game to snap it up...
