HiLux diffs vs Patrol diffs strength?

Ive got an 85 hilux wishing to run at least 37in treads in serious comps, its a blank canvas now so has the stocko lux diffs under it. I also have a set of GQ diffs i was planning to put under it.

Is there chromoly axles and cv's avail for GQ diffs?

WHICH IS STRONGER? lux diffs with longfields or GQ diffs with possible aftermarket axels and cv's???

Cost is no issue - SPONSOR!!!

Cheers
Luke

If cost is no issue, get some custom axle sets built with custom housings.

Do it first

Do it right

I have GQ diffs here. I would rather use what i have here now

So to answer the question directly which would be stronger? I will be exploring other avenues as well but for now i just want to know which would be stronger of the THE TWO I ALREADY HAVE. dont mean to sound like a dick. sorry! :new-bday:

GQ center with longfield axles. Contact Bubs to build a custom diff for your needs. The only problem with this to have a spare center it will have to be an ARB air locker customized. It uses a Nissan air locker with modified toyota side gears. Talk to Buddy he is your answer.

You can make hilux axles stronger than POOtrol ones .... invest in a set of longfields and chromo hub gears for the lux diffs and use them...

Bobby warrantys his CV's 100% no question just send him pics of the broken parts.. he has replaced about 10 CV's of mine over the yrs runing 42's...

Where AS

CAL.... wont call you back wont warrant his work and there twice the price...i wouldnt ever buy a set of these... to many mates have been screwed by him.

If you want to run the POOtrol diffs contact Mick Garner and invest in his CV's ... cheap but last ...

Or Just buy a set of Dana 60s or Mogs... isnt that right ZULTAN

Gq diffs will smash the shit out of hiluxes in terms of strength. Not only can you not get away from the fact that a hilux head has the piddly little crown wheel and pinion, but the steering setup is rubbish and people constantly rip the steering arm studs out of the knuckle due to poor design.

Id run GQ's over hiluxes any day of the week

Clearly you know nothing...

On a side note, if money was an issue the GQ diffs under a vehicle 2t lighter vehicle (lux) would be the go as in stock form they will handle 37's under a 1.7t rig easily.

Steering with the GQ axle is a bit of an issue because of the leaf springs. If your going to convert to coils/coilovers then all good. MQ knuckles may help here.

The pootrol diff center is alot stronger than the lux one IN STANDARD FORM.

If it were me, i would sell the GQ axles, get a set of 60 series ones (probably cheaper), talk to Chris bibby at Locktup4x4 and make them strong.

Dont mogs come with lockers and for around the 3-4k mark I would be going the mogs.
Think about it, lockers $2k Cromoly Axels and CV's $1k a set, then all the ongoing issues and breakages at comps. Do it right the first time.

AGREE there Rhett...
Disc brake conversion- ... if you want to do that... 1-2K depending on who you get them from
pinion conversion
custom tailshafts
Custom made rims...
Brake master cylinder upgrades...
Changing cable lockers to airshift
High steer...
Full hydro setup for steering....
the list goes one trust me.... but i love my mogs..hahaha :D

BTW the lux has a holden 5 litre! probly should have mentioned that earlier...

TO SUM UP
Hilux with longfields will turn 37's every day of the week? i assume i would be getting better pumpkin clearance from the lux housing too

STANDARD gq will turn 37's every day of the week? I will be doing crossover steering anyway and probly a 3 link in the front so all mounts will be cut off the housing with new ones welded exactly where i want them!!

As Zoltan keeps saying i wanna do this right the first time so im not constantyl on the tools when i could be making noise and rolling over!!

Willy hilux's GQ Centre with longs in a bubs housing or just straight 60's with longs

I have built GQ diffs (chromoloy axles and cvs) and a built 60's duff in my moon buggy. The share 40inch sticky treaps. The buggy is little and rear engine but I trust the 60 diff SO MUCH MORE

so possibly look at finding a set of 60 diffs to throw under? would they have a good size centre as a compromise between lux and gq centres for size?

you have GQ in your MK dont you Wicked? what cvs and axles do you run?

Cruiser/Lux axles have a lot more upgrade available than GQ stuff. Lux rear axles probably would need upgrading if driven hard, remember also that patrol steering arms are cast into the knuckles so steering options are limited.

60's have more or less the same sized centres as GQ's. Front 60 is low pinion though, GQ is high pinion.

the wider the track the better! this is another reason i wanted to use the GQ diffs.
what is the difference in track between the toyota diffs and the nissan items?

I assume the GQ is far wider than hilux but i dont know about 60ser or 80ser?

we have widened 60's to 80/GU width

lengthen the housing on the short side with a custom length longfeild chromo 30spl axle

The Track on the diff isn't too much of an issue although it would be good not to have to space the wheels out with aftermarket gear...

To be honest im leaning towards the hilux housings with longs.. widen the track with big rims and maybe spacers if necessary.

I just dont wanna be putting thousands of mula into something thats only going to be marginally stronger than a GQ which i have at hand.

Not really keen on all that fab work just to increase track. but good to know its been done!

No more fab work than welding on knuckle bracing mate. I have a kit ready here. I suggest getting an 80s rear axle to match the track width
