Reco or conversion

Hi all, been a long long time since ive been on here reading any posts. But basically i have the problem of deciding whether to reco my hilux 95 2.8D engine, or do an engine conversion. Probably something that has been discussed in the passed. I know alot of people do conversions but they usually do this themselves?? whereas i wont be able to. same with the reconditioning.
Ive been quoted a reco for 2500$ from a guy in Yenorra with 1yr or 20thou warranty, and another i been quoted 4250$ 1yr unlimited km warranty from a guy in penrith.
was wondering if anybody could suggests some mechanics who specialise in this work so i could get a few more prices and also if anybody could suggest some people who do conversions. I would like to find out some more info about conversions and how much more i would be paying. I was told for a conversion i would be paying over 10000$, is this true. If it is i will just be going for a reco.
Also does a reco engine last till atleast 300000km if serviced properly??
Any help would be great as i need to do this asap but dont want to make the wrong decision.
Thanks.

A reco engine should be no different to brand new.

A conversion would probably be better, but it's not going to be cheap - unless you can piece together some mates and get it done for the cost of beer.

Either is going to cost...
I Can't write any more as I have work to do :)

:)

No way mate. Reco's are done to a fixed price. So this means whoever is doing the reco is using as much of the original engine as possible to save costs.

Cams, valves, springs etc etc are checked for tollerance and if in spec are re-used. (More but I am not a mechanic so dont know the details)

I just got a reco 3L lux diesel from gem engines. It cost me $3300 which was a long motor and came with a timing belt. Tappet cover and sump were also included and a water pump. Every other bit of gear to complete the engine I had to supply.

Anyway I had my mate (diesel fitter) do all the work. Everything was overhauled or replaced new. To have any sort of warranty jsut about everything needs to be done to your parts:

Pump and injectors
Radiator re conditioned
Full servicing history etc etc

LUCKILY I decided to fork out and get it all done to keep the warranty valid. Just last week when the motor has only about 2000km at the most on it, it developed a massive top end knock and lost alot on compression in the second pot. My mechanic is currently in the process of warranty claims and finding out exactly what the knock is. Time will tell if the warranty will be honoured. So far I have spent near on $7 GRAND. That is not including the $1000 odd dollars it cost me in towing and fuel to get it home when the knock started
