coilovers vs airshocks

I did a fair bit of searching on a couple of different forums and mostly founds threads on spring rates of coilovers but my question is..
Which is better suited to what i want to do?
I have a hilux which is going to have 3/4 link rear end and want to know what suspension is best. I'm keeping the leaves in front. After reading through tough tracks class rules i can compete in the 37" class with coilovers but only in outlaw with airshocks? Is this because they arent as capable?
I was only planning on running 37's and competing in the lower class of the two. Both units come in up to 18" travel (more than enough)
What do you guys think? emulsion (air) shocks or coilovers? or should i just whack some coils and rancho's under it?
Also is linked suspension legal in many classes for Tough Tracks?
