Airlock every morning - 4.2 TD PATROL

Hi,

Wondering if anyone could help me find a problem with my Nissan Patrol TD42 turbo.

Recently got injectors cleaned. However I removed and replaced them myself. After replacing injectors, the engine started and ran perfectly. The next morning it wouldnt start and I had to prime it using the pump on the fuel filter. This has happend almost every morning for a week now.

Im thinking it could have somthing to do with the drain lines, as they were difficult to replace (had to disconnect drain line from fuel pump when I was refitting the injectors)

Can anyone tell me the proper procedure to bleed all air from fuel lines? Or perhaps where to start looking for a cracked/leaking fuel hose?

Regards,
Matthew

I'm no expert but I would loosen the nut on the fuel in hose on top of injector pump ( 17mm ) and get someone to operate the hand pump or turn vehicle over so you can see and make sure diesel is coming out without bubbles. Once you get flow tighten back up. Then break the union on each injector ( 17mm nut that holds them on ) and with all of them loose turn vehicle over, you should see diesel weaping out of each one, you will need to remove the air filter to see and get to them. If you are getting bubbles keep turning over or pumping till you get a nice consistant flow. Have never had any troubles with my GQ but when I did an engine swap in my MK I had to do this.
good luck.

sounds like you may have a cracked injector line... apparently pretty common when changing injectors... that or a split fuel line..

Did you use new washers on the injector spill tube nuts?
Might be getting a small leak back through one of them.
If the spill tube nuts were overtightened it may have crushed a washer too.
Also there is two types of washers, one has small holes in the face and go on the injector side of the spill tube

I would also try checking the injector tube flare nuts for tightness.

Because it is not starting at all i would be thinking there is air getting into the supply side of the pump or fuel filter - did you change the filter ? i have had a filter not seal correctly and did the exact same thing also check the returne hose from the injector pump for tightness or cracks as air slowly leaks back into the system overnight. i wouldnt think it would be an injector line because it would leak whilst running and only missfire on one cylinder on start up good luck

Hey guys thanks for all your replies!!

Was searching for a cracked injector line from what mcneil said, degreased the whole engine and took it for a spin. Found a microscopic fuel leak coming from one of the injectors. I’m not too sure on all the correct terminology for all the different parts so I’m sorry if this is hard to follow....i found that I had damaged the surface between the 'spill tube' and the 18mm flare nut that holds it to the injector. I’ve filed the surface back flush and replaced the nut. Seems to have stopped the fuel leak and hopefully the air getting back into the system.

Clanky - All new washers were used when refitting injectors, however do you know if there was supposed to be washers between the top of the spill tube and the flare nut?? Because there wasn’t on mine which is where it seems to be leaking from.

Forkcy - Sorry to hear that mate, there’s been a few good suggestions posted. I hope they help you too! I also went over all my hose clamps and made sure they were all tight, found a couple that where loose.

Cheers all, ill lets yas know if she fires up in the morning without any dramas. Fingers crossed.

Cheers Farmerbrown
Glad you found the problem.
There is only one washer with the (two small holes in it) on the underside of the spill tube (between injector and spill tube)
The top side doesnt have one

If your topside is leaking, you may be able to get away with adding a copper washer under the spill tube nut to help seal. You would have to watch the injector tube flarenut still has clearance to the spill tube nut so it pulls the injector tube down correctly
