hi guys

im going to put a turbo onto my td42
the kms on the engine is unknown but on the cluster its reads 400,000km
dont know weather to believe it or not

the turbo could b a t3/t4 turbo off a skyline rb25det
or a GT2860 so not after big power just enuff to get the old girl going

now the question is.
can i replace the bearing and piston rings cause the sump is going to come off to drill a hole for the oil drain
will this be enough to keep the td42 going or do i have to do more
-new oil pump
-boring
-recon the head (valves and valve springs)

thanks

Mate, just over a year ago I added a turbo kit to my TD42 GQ, had 500,000 on the clock at the time, Ive done 25,000 since. Like you I'm not sure if its true k's or not. So far I have done several long trips and many abusive week ends in the bush, all I added was a boost gauge and an EGT gauge. I turned up the fuel by 1/4 turn. Not after huge power. Ive never seen the Exhaust gas temp go over 500 deg C. Still going strong with no issues. I use good quality oil every 5000ks. Its a late model GQ 4.2 with the black rocker cover and vacuum pump on the back of the alternator. There are 3 versions of TD4.2 in the GQ I believe, some were better than the others.

It all depends on how well your engine has been looked after, regular oil changes every 5K, air filtration, correct valve adjustment etc.

It cann't hurt to whip the head off before you put the turbo on, check your valves and seats. Then whilst the head and sump are off you can pull the pistons out check the end gap of your rings, then check big end bearings, mains and the end play in the thrust bearing.

At least you will have peace of mind and you should get another 500K out of her with new rings and bearings. If you can afford it I also recomend getting the head ported and polished.

thanks for the reply guys

i'll do just the piston rings and bearings when the motor comes out
if i do this 1st then i wont have to rip the motor out to do the head

atleast i know i can get more km's from my engine when it gets boosted

anyone can recommend good rings and bearings?
what brand to get and what to look out for?

cheers
