Outer Limits 4x4 Board

I actually managed to do what I thought was the hard part for pulling the starter - cracking the two bolts (FYI - crow's foot wrench + socket extension + 3/8" breaker bar + pipe for the top one, long-handled 17mm ring spanner for the bottom) - but now I'm scratching my head trying to figure out how to actually get the starter motor out of the engine bay! Obviously, it won't come out through the wheel well. I don't think it will come out through the bottom, so that leaves the top - so I tried lifting it straight up (by the oil filter), but there's not enough room there between the A/C hard lines and the engine block. Even unbolting the motor itself from the solenoid didn't give me enough wriggle room.

Is there a trick to getting it out, or do I need to unbolt more stuff?

Well done getting the bolts out... But what car did you get them out of?

Not 100% sure on the 1kz. Is the starter on the drivers side?

On the 5vz-fe V6 lux and prados of the same era, best/easiest way I found is to remove part of the drivers side inner guard trim and the brake pipe clamp on the chassis to gently push the brake pipe out of the way to squeeze the starter out. This is going off memory, it's been a while since I've done one. Be gentle with the pipe, it doesn't need to move far.

No, it's on the passenger side.

Same might apply then. Failing that, out with the angle grinder.

I'll have to take another look this weekend . . . but I think the brake hardline basically runs right up the middle of the opening, so even loosening it probably wouldn't help.

This is a guide on how to remove the Starter Motor from an Diesel Hilux (3L, 5L or 5Le Motor)
Note: I'm putting this up because Josh asked how to do it.

Tools Required
- 17mm open end ring spanner
- 14mm open end ring spanner
- Ratchet and short extension bar.
- 17mm socket
- 14mm socket

To Remove
1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
2. Jack up the passenger side of the vehicle (using the bottle jack) and remove the wheel. Place the jack under the A-arm on the rivet head near the lower ball joint. This is a nice stable place to jack up just one side from.



3. If still fitted remove the black rubber inner wheel arch cover.
4. Slide back the rubber cover and disconnect the positive lead on the starter motor (14mm nut).
5. Disconnect the wiring plug from the solenoid.
6. Using the 17mm open end ring spanner and the 17mm socket remove the two retaining bolts for the starter motor. The lower bolt has a nut on the end of it and the upper bolt threads into the starter motor from the bell housing.

Installation is a reversal of removal

Terrific . . . but I've done all that. My question was how to actually get the starter motor out of the engine bay once it's unbolted.

Threw inner gaurs I m sure
