gq alternator upgrade

hi guys the alternator on my td42 has packed it in and i was thinkin of upgrading it to something like a 110 amp item is it just a matter of whacking it on and it will work fine? also any brands i should steer clear of? thanks

Yeah pretty much... When my GQ (50A) alternator died, I found that a GU one would fit (100A).
The plug is the same, but the wiring had to go around the air-filter box bracket the other way to reach it. It reaches without having to stretch it too much. That was just because the location of the plug was a bit further around the body of the new alternator.
The other thing was that the belts were a bit difficult to put on. just had to rooster the alternator sideways to put it on, THEN bolt it up. At first I tried to bolt it then slip the belt over the pulley but it was too tight. Next time the belts fail, I will just get one size up on the belts.
Apart from that you shouldn't have any problems. If you need the 110A or whatever because you're going to run huge stereos or whatever, you may find the 20 year old wiring has problems. I'd suggest talking with an auto electrician to make sure you don't melt fuses or let the smoke out of the wires
