they are AWESOME>

Driving position takes a little to get used to, check the footwell, bulkhead and chassis for rust. It WILL leak, just how bad is yet to be known. They take a beating and just keep on going. Has your son driven one? as he will either love it or hate it. Parts are cheap if you know where to look. Its a very personel thing, you will either get it, or you wont, but cool people get out of defenders.

1999 was the first of the TD5s, I never buy the first of any model as they often fix the problems after they release them. This isn't just a Land Rover thing. There are lots about, but like anything look at the general condition as well as the service receipts, don't just go off stamps in the book. I have a TDi Defender (from new) that has been prefectly reliable for 300,000 ks, but I have a TD5 Discovery that I bought second hand that has been trouble, mostly related to the previous owner, and it had all the stamps in the book.
