80 series clickin of accelaration

Post by AngryElmo »

Hey guys, i went for a bit of a hard drive last weekend and eneded up busting the drive flange off the hub on the driver side. I thought that this was not a problem as it has heppened before funning 35" tyres and a front locker, but now that i have replaced the hub i noticed under soft or hard accelaration (not holding a speed or slowing) i get a clicking noise. my orignal thought was the uni joints being dry so i pumped them full of grease and tryed it again.

Noise is still there.

So i removed the front tail shaft and now its gone, but the uni joints and all solid as.

So what i am now wondering is is it likely to be in my gearbox? or maybe crown wheel and pinion or maybe my cv's even?? i Run longfield cv's so i hope its not that and it feels like you can feel the clicking through the gear stick, thats y i thought uni's....... im going to borrow a front shaft and see if that might be it but are 80's knowen for damaging there gearbo's like this or should i be looking elsewhere for the cause?

Is it full time. There's not a lot of clearance between tierod and uni joint on front shaft so tierod may be hitting I have done that before.

Get a mate to watch front shaft as you move forward slowly.

Yeah full time, there should be a shiny spot if it has been hitting, so I can look at that in the morning.

If it still does it after trying a different front shaft, id say chipped crown wheel or CV. Try dropping the diff oil and see if any chips of teeth come out.
80 series gear box are pretty tough, and I would expect a gear box problem to still show up with the front shaft out

When you change out your crown wheel pinion set make sure you convert it to a solid spacer on your pinion insted of the colapsible spacer.
Will make a world of differenece to the life of the gear set .
Exspecially if you drive it hard
