I wanna know what people think about which tyres is better between B.F.G mud terrian and the Goodyear MTR?? I know the MTR is good on the rocks but overall which is best for all kinds of offroading and road kms.The MTR has a silica compound which probably makes it stop better on the road in the wet wouldn't it? Hows a B.F.G mud on wet roads?

i think the new BFG also has a silica compound but i'm not sure.
my local tyre service reakons they wear quicker then the mtr's.
but i can't coment on either of these from personal experience but i'm sure many on here will be able to.

Depends what size tire your looking at and what type of tarrain. I say BFG for mud and MTR for rock.

What type of 4WDing do you want to do?

i have good year MT/Rs on my swb vitara. they are going on 63,000 km.

size is 235/75R15 on standard vitara rims.

i live in darwin, so theres a lot of gravel roads, and a lot of mud. theres also a few fire trails that arent used anymore, and with that, a fair amount of dead trees, stumps and roots. a few places here also with big rocks.

anyway, i havent had a flat with them, and the spare is brand new from fitting. theres a few cuts and gouges in the sidewalls, but havent had a flat yet.

exceptional in the mud, clay and black soil up here. so the only tyre you put on your 4wd, is the tyre that wont get you stuck.

i've driven the same line with my mtrs, as a hilux that was fitted with BFGs, only difference was, he got stuck in the black soil and i didnt.
ok, before anyone says anything, the hilux was a dual cab, IFS, rear LSD and 31" BFGs.
my vitara was standard, with cheese cutting MTRs, open diffs front and back.

anyway, in my eyes, i've put the MTRs through a fair bit up here, and not a problem. so, my next set will be a set of 31"s for the vitara, as i know they are dependable.

just my opinion.

the silica compound is actually harder than rubber, they put it in there to stop them wearing so fast, and allows them to put a softer rubber in the matrix - i.e. it's the softer rubber that sticks and the silica stops them wearing so fast...

if you want a good cheap soft rubber tyre check out the hankook RT-01 (Dynamic mud terrain) They have real soft rubber which is good on a zook and they still do long mileage (cos zooks are so light). I've done about 25000kms on my 31's (driving like a maniac) and they still have more than 10mm tread all round.

I bought a set of 30" hankooks secondhand and drove them for a while then sold them for more than i had paid for them...good tyres i reckon

the centre tread is more open than most MT's and they work a treat

Thanks but the hankook is only a 2 ply sidewall,i want atleast 3

You can have 2ply sidewalls that are stronger than 3ply. Check out the thickness and construction not just the number of plys.

If its all round your after go for the MTR's I was happy with mine but wouldn't trade my swampers for anything.

just an idea

XTerrains are said to eb as good onroad as most AT's. This said, not many people seem to go for them for some reason. If they really were the perfect tyre for every condition i reckon we would all have them by now!!

I've seen the xterrains work well on heavier vehicles like cruisers and patrols but never on a zook

My old boy got over 70thou on his BFG's. They were pretty chopped up by the end. He does mostly highway and gravel roads in a fully loaded cruiser ute. He just got another set, so he is happy with em.
