G'day,
I had the same prob 12 months ago too.... was a worn 5th gear syncro, caused from using 5th gear while driving round town. Apparently happens quite alot in them, I had a slightly wider gear put back in when I had it rebuilt and had no dramas for the six months afterwards.... before I hydraulic'd the engine (still rebuilding now!!!) Anyway, hope that helps.

If the 60 has bee used for towing in 5th gear then the syncro can be very worn

I have a workshop manual that shows some critical dimensions to inspect in the linkages during assembly. My brother has rebuilt many of these gearboxes and says that if they are assembled outside the tolerances, they will slip out of gear. I have the critical info and can forward it to you if you wish.

it may also be from a worn or loose syncro detent spring
it should be coverd under your warrenty 6month 20.000kms
or was it more
call the workshop that did it for you thay should fix it free of charge unless thay suggesterd it replaced & you knocked the work back.
than its on you neck $$$$$$$ all over again

i would say that it is the detense springs. Or your shifter is rooted, 9 times out of 10 people will rebuild the box and wack the old shifter back in and complain that the shifter is still "sloppy". yes it is working and it is getting the gear but it isnt fully selecting it. Often happens in first gear aswell.

Ensure the plastic bush on the end of the gearstick is good and the Urethane type bush under the gearstick pivot ball is good. Ive replaced these and helps alot as when the bush wears it doesn't shift 5th far enough. Also ive put a Dia 8mm by 2mm long packer behind the 5th gear detent spring and had good success.

I've heard that it is a common problem - the 5th gear gets worn because it was an add on to the original box
If not fixed it has a tendency to actually fall out and float around the box
Thats heresay though

Is the pre 85 and post 85 5 speed boxes different?

They rotated the gearbox about 8 degrees from memory, and then did away with the cardin joint on the front shaft. Don't know if the rest of the box changed though ?

Most of the differences were in the input shaft bearing all the 5th gear stuff is the same and it common that the parts just wear out.
