Another 3l turbo

Hey guys,
i know this subject has been done to death but i got my hands on a 2lte turbo kit from the wreckers, ive done a ******* of reading up on the subject and have a fair idea of how to put it on to my 97 3l dual cab hilux , just have a couple of questions.

Will the 2lte intake manifold bolt straight up to the 3l motor and work without the electronics?

I'd like to put a boost compensator on the 3l pump but am having trouble finding a 2lt incjector pump with one any ideas?

Was thinking of making up 2.5 inch aluminium turbo piping, wondering if there would be any advantage to this?

Still undecided on wether or not i need to decompress the 3l motor after turboing any thoughts would be great,

If anyone has a step by step guide or pictures of there setups it would be greatly appreciated, would help me work out where all the little air lines and **** hook up to,

Cheers guys hopefully i can get this baby bolted on and reap the rewards of slightly more power and torque :lol:

The manifold should bolt up fine as the block on the motors is the same just increased displacement.
I didn't lower the compression on mine and it's still fine a year later (11 psi)
I don't have a boost comp on my pump either.
You should get a Pyrometre.

no need to decompress.
if your going for big power get a boost comp fitted.
you MUST have a free flowing exhaust and a pyro.
a manual boost controller is highly recommended. do anything and everything to make turbo more responsive.

with the 2lte inlet manifold you will need to rip out the butterfly's. not wiring or vac hoses required.

Max EGT I see (pre Turbo) is around or just over 600c under full load up a hill.
On the highway cruising its around 400 - 440c
I have heard they can be tuned for more power and higher EGT (700 max?) but I'm happy with how it goes as is.

mines running a bit cooler so looks like i can wind the fuel up a fair bit yet ;)

Ok sweet guys so should all fit up fine and everything, was at the wreckers today and found a 2lt injector pump with a little throttle position sensor attatched to the boost compensator, he wanted $100 for the whole pump i left it because i only wanted the top and wasnt sure wether that boost compensator would work properly on my pump.
Could i just stick it on and leave the sensor unhooked?
Would it be worth $100 for the compensator does it make THAT much difference?
also my motor is just clocking over to 300k it is still in good condition, starts first go every time, so im going to do 300k service on it and was wondering if i should do a rebuild on the motor just to be sure it won't blow up lol?

My Turbo came with a pump with the boost comp on it.
I researched getting it off the pump so I could attach it to my 3L pump. It's not an easy job.
I was able to take it off and reattach it to the spare pump again but I wasn't game to try messing with my working pump. You will have to take the pump off the engine to do it and I read that getting any dirt whatsoever into a fuel pump is a bad thing.
All the boost comp does is use a diaphram in the round 'hat' on top to push a lever that ups the fuel under boost.

probably go back down tommorow and grab it if ya reckon its worth having for that much,
What do you guys reckon about a rebuild? would it be worth it at with 300k on it?
Or should i just chuck it on and hope for the best?

ah ok dunno if id be game to screw round with taking th whole pump off, how much do you think it would cost to get it fitted?

if your not sure on the motor just get the compression checked. that will tell you if its even worth doing.

i would just keep the 2lt pump as a spare at this stage. get the engine going with standard pump. normally you can wind the fuel up a bit without needed the boost comp.
when you start looking at getting more power out of it, or the 3l pump starts leaking etc, then get the 2lt one reco'ed, tuned and fitted.

its the other way around, it limits the fuel until the boost moves the diaphragm which moves the lever out of the way.

Yeah mate, i have heard that putting a 2lt pump on the 3l motor is not that good, simply because the 2lt is a smaller motor and doesnt supply enough fuel?

i can't remember the plunger sizes at the mo. i think they are the same.
2lt and 3l have similar power output so fueling will be fairly similar. in theory pumps should be similar. 5l pumps are bigger afaik.
if your going to put out a lot of power then you would want bigger plunger anyway so all that can be done when you reco the pump.

i wouldnt reco it, big $$$ on an engine thats not worth much.

i personally wouldnt go to the effort of the boost compensator unless you were already having the pump off for a reco etc.

slap it on:

limit boost to about 10 or 11 max.

make sure you have a seperate oil return line plumbed in.

i wouldnt bother making an alloy cross over pipe - mine had a home made stainless one.

manifold will fit but need to move some studs to suit it.

as mentioned, get a pyro! auberins do a decent one for about $110 inc probe and shipped.

apart from that enjoy the transformation!
