I really liked mine. All I did was to free up the zaust and intake and it was great. It was in a shortie. I reckon the shortie with the SD33T went much better than any of the GU 4.2's I've driven.

There are examples of these motors doing 500,000 ks+. Personally I recon they arent run in untill they have atleast a 100,000ks on em. Very tough & reliable motor. 10/10

I've never heard a bad thing about them, and I've heard a lot of good things about them.

Here's one, when you exceed aprox. 30deg. (only driving forwards uphill) the blow-by pipe on the LHS of the block will let your precious oil run out all over the track.
This is largely due to the fact that Nissan designed the SD33 originally as a forklift engine, thus never engineering the motor to be run on angles

Either yours has been modified... as many have been done, anyway a mate of mine used to tell me that his SD33 was so good 'cause his didn't spill oil everywhere... long story short we worked out why when he put a rod through the block traveling up the F3... Low oil.
In saying this I have seen them not do this also and still be in good working order, however mine was an '80 and from memory Nissan address the issue by the MK.

I am thinking of using this engine for a G60 conversion I want to do. But I have been told that these engines had problems and to prefer the 2.8 td. Is it true?

had my old 1980 for 15 years - 340K's. Mechanically, never had to touch it. Thats reliabililty & cost-effectiveness for yas!!!!

if its turboed keep egt under 600 degrees or you will be replacing heads often as they crackthrough the valve stem guide n port, motors after 1982 had a different side plate so no oil runs out on big angles, they are good strong motors if treated right

put it this way.......
The SD33 will outlast the G60.... by a long way !
The RD28 will die before the G60 does !
I'd say its a simple choice of whether you want to fit one motor once or have the option of having to fit a second engine after the first dies
I'd pick the SD33

Hey Kingy...
FYI...I saw a G60 P engine (that is the P40 to you) the other day that had done 850kms! Not only that we haven't had a Patrol sold in the USA since 1969 and we still have many of them around. For old 4x4's G60's are the best!
The SD33 doesn't like getting hot. Get it hot and it may crack the head or worse.
I never had oil come out my breather tube, even when I park it on steep angles get out of the truck, drink a beer and smoke a cig and then take some pics. I have had it dump tons of oil out my bad rear main seal though on angles.
I agree...it is a great motor, able to take a good flogging. Plus it can be modded up and may suprise you. It also fits in the G60 pretty good. I know a guy here in the USA who has put one in a 1980 G61 (that is basically a G60) and it fit just fine. If you drop in the SD33 you can also drop in a MQ/MK 5spd tranny and transfer. Ohhhh that is nice!
Pictures of the SD33 going into the G61 can be seen on my websites forum. Check the url in my sig below...

they might not like getting hot, but if ya got a half decent rad keepin it kool ya will never have that prob, iv once seen the temp gauge over halfway and that was towing 2tonne up a hill for 20 mins...
never bin upto 3/4

really good lumps...
have one in my range rover..was an sd33 n/a..now turboed,large intercooler.free flow big bore exhaust.no muffler..large intake..modded fueling.egt gauge..haules ar$$..more power than the 3.5lv8 gaser it replaced..sounds like a mach truck..still going strong..unknown millage..
can be prone to cracking pistions and head..but this seems to be only on non intercooled trucks and ones allowd to run too high egt and also turned off when too hot, thus cooling to quick..its not exxcessive heat that does the head, its dramatic temperature changes...so look after it and it will look after you..

great donk
bought a MK swb N/A turbo'ed to put the motor in my MK, had a cracked head cause the rad was waaaay to small and it had a heavy duty hayman reece tow pack.. put a brand new head on a 320 000km old motor now got over 400 000km on the bottom end. How do u keep them cool,, who knows.. 6 core rad and intercooler..
