After installing 80% reduction gears in my GU Auto i replaced the oil with Dextron 3. Red stuff came out when i cracked it open. Done many hard core trips without any problems. My GQ I was told by a reparable mechanic to put gear oil and 1 Cup of Dextron. GQ runs smoother now.

85/140 penrite gear oil to keep those 83% gears quieter. Been running it this combination for 5 years / daily driver
Also looking at Redline shockproof for next time to see if that keeps them quieter.
Originally it came with ATF, and it came out blacker than a summernats car back tyre and the consistency of water.

It depends which free wheeling hubs you have. If you have the manual ones, use gear oil but if they are the auto ones, use ATF. If you put gear oil in when you have the auto hubs, the extra drag when it's cold can cause the front driveshaft to turn when the transfer is in 2WD & lock the hubs.

Another good reason to have manual hubs
