My friend has just bought a 2004 V8 Sahara Landcruiser. Very nice. Service history is there, but we don't fully trust it. He wants to start fresh with new fluids everywhere.

What is involved in doing an oil change on the transmission? It is a 5 speed auto, and it seems to be OK at present. We have 4L of type 4 fluid for the job. We cannot find any dipstick to check the levels.

There isn't a dipstick to check the level. They have a bolt much like a manual transmission but there is a procedure to ensure the auto is at the correct temperature. Get a copy of the repair manual and have a look, it's been years since I've done it.

If you want to do it properly you need to drop the pan and replace the filter. You should also being doing a complete fluid flush to get all the old burnt fluid out of the torque converter, transmission cooler etc. I would allow between 10-15 litres of fluid to give it a really good flush out. Make sure you have the correct type fluid too, this is very important.
