G55/G500 Merc what to look for 2nd hand...

Hi all,
well i am living in dubai and wouldent mind grabbing a little merc (2nd hand though) to go and do some wheeling in the desert. There are lots and lots of nice examples here of the g55 or g500 (even some diesel ones) but i dont realy know what to look for.
What is maintenance like on these ones?
I am currently looking at a 2003 model AMG G55 (V8) pertol with about 160K on the clock. how far do these units go without needing to be chucked/become to expensive to maintain.
what are the main letdowns of the G55/g500 i would imagine they are still all very similar as the body hasnt changed for at least 20 years...
anyways, id love to find out a little about the maintenance before i get myself into something i wish i had not. Also my wife will be driving the little car, so it has to be reliable.
I know old diesel engines and worked a lot on my old patrol (see sig), but pertol engines i know nothing about. How many Kms would i be expecting to get outa one of these G55's before its used up??
anyways, id love to hear for anyone with any info at all.

PS, Gwagon Steve, hope your well and can share some much needed info for me. Also hope your Gwagon is still kicking butt. and that reminds me, i would be looking to add a body lift or just suspension lift into the gwagon. Any hints/advise there? I havent seen any here on the road with any lift at all, and they sure do look low, esp for desert driving...
