Tyre speed ratings

Hi gurus,

I'm after some info on tyre speed ratings.

Do your tyres have to meet/exceed the factory specs for the speed rating?

Reason I ask is I'm after new tyres and my car's speed rating is "H" which is 210km/h. Now the only way my car would get even close to 210 is if I drove it off a cliff.

I've shortlisted some tyres but one of them has a speed rating of "T" which is ONLY 190km/h

I've read somewhere (a QLD racing pdf I think) that tyres in Aus only need to meet "S" which is 180km/h (70km/h more then the highway speed limit). Is this true? I've looked in the ADR's but can't seem to find any reference to minimum speed ratings (ADR 23).

Thanks,
Ben

I just found my own answer:

http://www.jaxquickfit.com.au/tyres/tip ... eed-rating

This was confirmed when I called RTA technical just now.

Your tyres must have a speed rating above 140km/h. If the tyres are rated lower then your car speed rating then a small sticker must be affixed to the windscreen stating so.

EDIT: Found the RTA doc:

Seems i spoke too soon D:

same in qld, except you dont need a sticker it seems

Speed and load ratings
The speed rating of all tyres must be:
• a speed of at least:
for an off-road passenger vehicle – 140km/h
for another car (sedan, station wagon etc.)
up to nine adult seating positions or a car
derivative – 180km/h
for another motor vehicle – 120km/h
• the vehicle’s top speed, if lower.
Load ratings of tyres must be at least equal to those
specified by the manufacturer on the tyre placard fitted
to vehicles made after 1972. For other vehicles, the load
rating of a tyre must be capable of carrying the part of
the vehicle’s gross mass carried by the tyre.
