HELP!! TD42 loss of power above 2k revs

Hi all.
I’ve recently lost a lot of power in my 2000 GU patrol. I was driving along the highway at about 110kmh when I realised that’s as fast as it would go. Slowly the more I drove the slower it got, maxing out at about 95kmh after about 50km of driving. I pulled up and changed the fuel filter thinking it was clogged....no change. It would rev to about 2400revs max in natural. I then turned the engine off and on repeatedly, each time the engine would rev a little higher and finally I got it to rev to about 4400. It seemed to be fixed however still not as much power as usual.
Then took off for home again and got another 50km down the highway and the same thing, maxing out at about 90kmh.
I took the new fuel filter off when I got home and it was still perfectly clean inside.
Does this sound like air getting into my fuel lines somewhere? Is there anyway to test if is air getting in? I was thinking of replacing the fuel line between the fuel filter and injector pump with clear hose so I can see any bubbles?
Cheers,
Matthew
