Viscous fan problem

Just got back from a great week on Moreton island. Unfortunately on our second trip up the beach the engine tried to cook itself. We stopped in time and let it cool - took about a litre of fluid and we went back to base camp. Next day we decided to investigate thinking the fan was the problem. On close inspection after removing the fan we noticed that the spring on the front of the fan was broken. So being good bush mechs, we turned the spring around as though it was fully expanded and wired it to the other part of the spring that is fixed to the front of the hub. After we did this we had absolutely no temp issues for the rest of the week. So first question what does this spring do (I know it expands and turns the middle spindle) and second can this be replaced?
