60 power steer into BJ42

Hey guys,
I'm in the early stages of planning a 60 series power steer conversion for my 42, i've had a read through all the threads on the bible (several times), and i'm just wondering a couple of things;

How up do date is Tooheys shopping list?
Is there any parts people have changed or didn't need ect?

Mine is a 81 model so no factory power steer for me. Aside from having to source a 3 row pulley from somewhere, is there any issues I will run into not having power steer to start with?

Hey mate,

That list is pretty comprehensive. You can do it easier if you want.

I'd start with mounting the 60 series box with one of these: http://www.budscustoms.com.au/product.asp?ProductID=929" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.
You can use your standard steering shaft, just cut it and sleeve it to the desired length (most engineers don't like this though). Depending on where you decide to mount the pump, you may not need to mod the radiator either. Your standard steering arms should be fine. Your standard tie rod will be fine also.

Shouldn't be any other problems.

When I did my 60 PS conversion on my 40, I used a 55 column, a 60 box and an intermediate shaft from a 70. To adapt the 55 column to the 70 intermediate shaft I used bits from a sacrificial 80 rag joint. I disassembled half the uni in the 80 rag joint with a fine cutting disc and a cold chisel, did the same on the 70 intermediate shaft and made a new uni with the two halves that allowed me to adapt the 55 column to the 70 intermediate. This did away with the 80 rag joint and makes it much more stable. I did ask a driveshaft shop to do it for me, but due to the design of the uni and its use in the steering system they declined. The bearings are pressed in and use a crimp to retain them.. I recrimped mine with a small cold chisel and they are working fine, no indication that they will fall out. I dont know if an engineer would pass this method, but IMHO its much better than having a sloppy rag joint in there..

Looking around on other forums, now that 55 columns are getting hard to find most people are using 7X or 60 series columns now and the collapse-able intermediate shaft for the 7x models and or modifying the factory column with an extra bearing at the bottom and having it splined.

Either way the 55's intermediate shaft is too short for the conversion, but I always thought the spline was the same on the 75 intermediate shaft as the 55 but looks like I was wrong.

You could get power steered 55s as well,though I don't know if they are direct bolt into 40 series.....

Er yeah it does exist, got it on my HJ 47. Not as good as a properly set up 60 series box though.

There's a lot more play in the 40 series setup.

The 70 intermediate shaft has a uni that fits on the 60 PS box and the other end has a smaller spline than the 40/60/hilux stuff.. This is why some conversions use the 80 rag joint to adapt the small spline to the large spline of the 55 column. I didnt like the 80 rag joint being in there, so I did what I wrote above..

yeah good plan, Is there enough beef on the other uni to drill it out or have it resplined, or if engineers would pass the column getting machined down and re splined.
Thats if you can find a 55 column

I dont think resplining unis would be any help really, as you still have the small spline on the 70 intermediate shaft to deal with. I will see if i can get some photos of what I did, as I have never seen anyone else do it before..

sounds like a plan. I need to have a good look at the 60 and 75 column and work out which one to use for my troopy.

Neither work well or look good. You need a 55.. Col had a 55 in his yard some time ago, go see him..

That's where it helps to have a 55, pity I am putting 60 series power steering in that though.

Any one know where to get a 3F power steering pump bracket by any chance? have power steering out of a 2H powered 60 to go in, though have a 3F in the 55.

I had thought about that, but from what i've read 60 steering is much better, and isn't there still problems with the tyre scrubbing the steering arm (at the rear of the tyre) on factory 40 steering?

Plenty of info on Ih8mud.com about 60series p/steer conversions in earlier models if you havent checked that site out yet. Was from that site's members that reassured me to convert mine with relative ease...as well as start the 60 series diff conversion and running 75 series springs in the back of the earlier series (though have gone for 78 series with their 1500mm lengths for better flex)

Plenty of info all round for 40 through to 60 series (complete with 55Series appreciation society!!!) on Iha8mud and it is very easy to spend a few lost hours on there.
