How tough is a GQ tranfer case?

I'm using a GQ transfer behind an LS3 and 6L80E transmission.
This means it's seeing around 550nm of torque fed though a 4.2:1 first gear.
The interesting part is all that power is fed into the front drive flange and the rear drive flange has been machined off as this is in a 2WD application.
Will the chain drive to the front hold up?
The engine is mounted back to front so the drive is fed to the rear axle from the front output flange.
The vehcile only weighs around 1250kg but runs 12"drag radials for street use.

with an automatic it will be fine. The auto takes all of the shock out of it.
People run over 1000Nm thru them in 4wd with extra low reduction gears which are before the "front" drive chain. Far more torque and shock loading goung through the front alone than your chev and auto will make.
I would use redline MT90 or equivalent high quality synthetic oil in it though, purely because it is doing so many kms in "four wheel" drive. I would tear it down and check it out after 20,000kms to see how it is wearing.
I would leave the "rear" drive flange on, you're gonna need a handbrake on a road car. much neater to have it there than to have cables to the wheels and special calipers etc, more unstrung weight. - I assume it s some kind of high performance thing.
remove the anti backlash gear in the transfer, and the reduction gears if possible and look at locking it in 4 high using machined spacer or something, otherwise DOT arent going to like your handbrake arrangement.
Another thing you might want to look at is a vee drive off a boat to acheive the same thing.
Dont go too tight with your LSD, or it will handle like a pig and understeer under acceleration. when you gas it the weight will transfer onto the rear which is already bloody heavy, in fact I would start with an open diff, at least for engineering and licensing.
thats about all that springs to mind at first thought.

I agree about the 1,000nm but this is distributed to both front and rear axle and the front axle will break traction before it can do too much harm. I expoect this si whey the rear drive shaft is so much beafier than the front.
I used the drive flange off a rear centre in lieu of the front output flange so I could run a waggon rear drivesahft.
The diff is a tight GQ LSD fitted into a front centre that has been spun 180degrees (to make it counter-rotate).
My engineer required separate callipers on the rear for the handbrake so I'm using 2 ALKO trailer callipers, which allowed me to remove the old rear output flange.
I plan on keeping the 4L option (this would see over 4,00nm into the drive chain) as it could be fun on the burn out pad or just to see if it will wheelstand.
I looked into V drives but they whine an awfull lot.
I figure the transfer cases are so cheap I'll see what happens and if it dies I'll look at my options.
So far I've only drive a couple of k's and it seems to turn in about the samer as my Rover with Patrol diffs.
This is in a road car by the way, not a comp car.

they are cheap because no one breaks them, you may as well be the first to start going through them sounds like a pretty cool car, got photos?

I'll give posting photos a try for the first time!
Adaption of the 6L80E to the Patrol transfer.
Elevated view of the ray with engine facing backwards. Note the intake has been reversed.
Proportions don't look too bad either.
When people ask why build it the answer is cause I can. I just want to build soimethig that is faster than my wife's SLK55 Benz. so it needs to do 0-100 in under 4.9 seconds.
I'm retired and this stops me annoying my wife.

Personally, if someone asks you that question you should just slap them for asking a stupid question.

awesome!
I used to have a 1970s toyota Hi-ace ute, we built a lightweight ornamental tray for it which only weighed 80kg. one bloke could lift both back wheels off the ground.
It had a rather angry holden stroker 6 in it. Brilliant fun to drive but it would only do 90kmh in the wet, traction limited. so light it would take off and corner unbelievably. It was great fun watch peoples faces as you threw it around corners and they're sitting forward of the axle feels like it's gonna fall over..
It had a weber off a falcon 6 on it, had a nice chunky idle and used to get a few looks.

Heath was running his with a 500hp duramax ( could have been more). Guessing that has alot of torque. Did a number of trips to the drag strip with nil issues.
Also a number of guys are running some decent engines in patrols like 350rwkw TB48's, 700hp supercharged 6.2lt chev etc. Dont seem to hear of transfer issues.

Yep Greenie(has a tb48 stroked to a 5.1 turboed)and it broke every other thing in it`s drive train but the transfer.Cory has been running a built 6lt with a 3.5 lt charger through a manual and we`ve raced these cars for years and never broke a transfer.I only have seen one break and it was due to a impact on a rock.

Thanks for the advice.
The reason I posed the question is I was laying under a GQ looking at its exposed chain and was suprised at how small it was.
The GQ had had a big front-ender and the case was smashed hence I could see the chain.

I keep looking at it, that thing is bloody awesome.
Needs a big obnoxious wing.
will your engineer let you do an 8 into 1 overhead extractor setup?

X2 The sound is awsome.Have a listen to a healthy class 1 buggy with a 8 into 1 .Sweet music!!

I don't think the big wing will work with an old grey haird guy driving it!
I had thought of 360 degree headers but they would need to flow up and over the engine and this would cause problems with coil placement and the plastic intake manifold.
Additionally it must still run cats so they would be hanging in space.
A nice set of "over the transom" headers would be oh so cool but then they would need heat shielding so stop people BBQíng their hands.
Thought you may like to see the adaption of the Patrol transfer to the GM auto.
I made the adaptor and had the drive shaft adaptor made.
So far I've done everything in house except the wiring of the engine, shorting the axle shaft and re-splining it plus the drive adaptor for the transfer.
Everything else is my doing from shortening the diff housing and flipping the centre to the design of all bracketry.

This is an interesting build.
Might keep an eye on it
