2.4 MOTORS

Is there any difference in the 2.4 diesel motors in 85 4x4 lux and a 1990 4x2 hilux will this motor bolt up to my 85 5 speed and will the turbo bolt on as i did notice the intake is a little diff so can i swap intakes or what as i can get the 1990 engine at a very good price.

are the rocker covers the same or not? if they both have a cast alloy rocker cover then more or less all interchangeable, but the 1990 one is very likely to be a 2L-TII (pressed steel rocker cover) and in that case none of the manifolds or anything else is interchangable. the bellhousing pattern is the same though so the motors can be swapped between vehicles.

The 1990 2.4 will bolt up to your gearbox and engine mounts
You will have to change the sump and the oil cooler side plate
If you leave the 4x2 oil filter housing on, the front diff will damage the filter
The 1990 2.4 has a 75 mm intake manifold the 1985 has 63mm intake
which makes it restrict the air flow
What turbo do you have to bolt on if 85 type I think the ports are smaller
and I think the bolt pattern on the head is different easiest way to find out is to try it and and tell us

Thanks all , yes it has the pressed rocker cover but i did think toyota would change things they have a habit of doing that pretty regular must get boared in the design room. Im going to the wreckers tomorrow to see if i can geta manifold for the turbo yes its just a toyota standard one .

an aftermarket turbo manifold from the 3L (2.8 litre) will fit the later model 2.4 (pressed rocker cover) - should give you a bit more scope at the wreckers - or you could probably get one new from APS or Denco or AXT or whoever else makes them.

hey rufflux i got a 92 efi turbo motor with no manifold turbo or injector pump (someone else thaught they wanted it more)if your interested and you can check the differances between it and a 86 model 2.4 while your here you can have the motor for $450

mate i have a ln65 1986 model running a late model 90-91 model 2.4td-ii it bolted straight into the old stud pattern on the bell housing. just watch the line up of the motor and the sump used....may need to change oil pick and shit. just for future refrence ive been running 14psi boost and there is no signs of where..i run 11 when on road and i have just added an intercooler and i paid $150 all up for the intercooler and a few stubbies later fitted...dynoed she is pull 104kw not bad for a little 2.4 and running so it will last....if u have any trouble drop us a line....

My brother had something similar to yours, Safari Turbo, Mitsubishi EVO intercooler, oilcooler, bigger radiator, runnin about 160 km/h on the motorway and never had any technical probs with it.
We do not know, but we estimated that it had around 100kW
The engine was the original L-type diesel from Toyota in the LN65 and the only reason why he had to sell this great rig was some trouble with the highway cops. All that crap around the engine wasn´t approved by authority, mate got cold feet and sold it to a bloke who used it strictly offroad without registration plate.
Do you have a fan on the intercooler to get more air thru when goin slow?

hey Gerhard yeah it has a thermo fan underneath and has a thrmo switch built ...it comes in at about 90oc ....pretty low to keep it cool....yeah i haven't topped my truck out yet but it sits on 120km easily but still has more so i would have to agree these little motors are great if serviced properly..cheers

yea I know; have to do something for more punch cos the engine in my bundy is still stock. My prob is that I have the older version of 2L-T (from 1987) and tis is far less durable than the newer engines.
Have to make a slightly power otimizing taking good care for oil and water cooling and have to hide the intercooler, best would be in front of the radiator, and paint it black.
Cos when the cops here in Austria figure out that your engine has more power than stock, they´ll spike your nuts down to the floor.
Have you got an additional oilcooler? cheers!

these turbo diesels are a whole new ball game to me only ever had petrol how easy are the inter coolers to fit , do i have to play around with the plumbing like make things up or do the come in a kit ??? sorry only new to this but all help will be listened to .

gerhard.......i don't have a oil cooler yet. do u reckomend one and where could i mount it? in front of the radiator?....and ruflux wether petrol or diesel an intercooler is the same....but there are two different varieties..air to air and water to air...won't go into the details as it would take alnight...most on 4b's r air to air. plumming is simple but u need to have the right gear....normal kits cost any where from $1800 to $4000..this might be scary...but i did my whole sytem for under $300 ..not bad but just got to know what u are doing...any quries pm me id be glad to help... cheers

good question...i don´t know, most dieselcracks over here in my place recommend one if an intercooler is planned to be installed. But this is mainly for the older 2L-T engines, as the newer ones are much more durable!!!
There are special oil dipsticks available with temp. sensor, such as they were used from car service stations when exhaust gas measurements where taken.
Ask one if they could measure the oil temp directly after you were goin´ some km a bit faster. I think maximum temp. of oil should be not more than 120 degrees, but this may some cracks here know much better than I do.
If you decide to install an external oilcooler, there´s enough space available in front of the radiator. It doesn´t disturb effective water cooling, maybe the fan is comin up some more time. There are systems available where you can bypass the oil to the cooler from oil filter mount. Comes between mount and oilfilter. Some of this bypasses have included a valve which opens at 90 degrees, this would be the best ones. I think it´s just simple to install, and very effective.

yeah went and spoke to some guys about the oil cooler.....u seem to be right that the older motors have some teething problems with keeping oil to a good operating temp.....they showed me the diffrence between late model and the model engine i have...big difference in oil cooler behind the oil filter....so they recommended i don't need one but if i do i have to put in a 't' peice from the oil return on the turbo or take from the back of the alternator...hey gerhard have u got any pics of ur brothers rig?????

no unfortunately I´m afraid we took no pics, it was more than five years ago when he sold his LN 65.
He was often searching for some pics of the best Hilux he ever had, but never found one...
Now he has a 1992 LN105 with solid axles in front and rear and the newer 2L-diesel. The engine is stock, but he also has some plans for more punch.
Doesnt look spectacular, but is a reliable car, very good for long travels.

top truck just needs a lift and some 33 or 35's to let u go more places....im intrested ur in austria??? whats the price for arb lockers over there...he it like AU$1700 for the rear or front with all the lines and compressor?!.............................................

When you guys gonna buy lockers and compressor for 1700 AU$, we can do that, too; for 1700 EUR, of course, or even a bit more
It always was a good idea to order directly in Oz. For example, my shocks and spring coils for the bundera were that weak that I replaced it with OME parts. Payed 880 EUR, including Austrian V.A.T (20%), and got 15% off regular price.
Would I have ordered it in Oz directly, I probably could have saved up to 300 EUR.
My brother ordered the Rancho adjustable tie rod for front solid axle in Oz. Payed 170 AU$ incl. shipment. In Austria, best offer was around 200 EUR.
Best example was the (Toyota original) adaptor plate for connecting a PTO winch to a mate´s BJ42.
About 800 EUR best offer in Germany. My brother asked a guy from Australian west coast for a hint, and got the name of a trader where he bought it for 450 AU$.

since they are made here and ARB is operated from within Australia, this is the cheapest place in the world to get them. it can be done a fair bit cheaper than $1700.
