Hey all I'm new to this forum, was wondering wether anyone has made there own drop shackles? I'm thinking about it cause I don't want to fork out $600 for some. If anyone has made there own or got pics of plans that they want to share it would be much appreciated.
Cheers, Jamie

Hi Jamie
A few questions for you
Is it a trail only rig or road going?
What state? I know that there have been pin-able drop shackles engineered in NSW but you've got no hope in QLD
How are your fabrication skills?
You "could" make some yourself. The concept isn't that hard and theres' that many images of them out there on the internet that r and d isn't an issue.
IF it's for a trail rig only then i say give it a go. But you'll quickly find out why they charge a bit for them since there's a difference between a set that works well and a pile of smoking hot junk metal on the floor of the shed.
If it's for a road going rig then i think you would want to be a pretty proficient builder for something that holds your deathtrap together on the same road that me an my family drive on.
Your call

Welcome to the forum mate.
Using a traction bar/ladder bar will reduce axle hop and pinning the shackles on road will make sure they're no more "unsafe" than normal leafs & shackles.
There's a funny idea on here that they can unload on side angles and make your car roll. People happily have coil drop-outs on their Patrols and don't complain of the same thing though? While the shackles will unload at big angles, the car has to be at it's balance point by then and either way, it's about to roll. The weight of one wheel and 50% of that axle holding the car from rolling might be enough to stop it rolling on a slope 1 degree more than if it had scissor shackles.
The Superior Engineering ones are very good and there's some good info about scissor shackles on their site...

If you want to make them, try something simpler like these:

I hadn't meant to say that they were "unsafe" as a concept by the way, Just that if they're not built right for a road going vehicle then they're one of the main underpinnings of what's holding your junk on the road.

All good bro. I was quoting the bloke who posted above ya. Totally agree with you about unsafe rigs on the same roads as my misses.

Just get normal shackles and drop them. Then you can say you have dropped shackles.
