also how weak are these motors, can you still run a decent turbo setup or waste of time????
thanks

where are you getting your info? TD42's are a tough motor and like anyhthing if serviced well will run well into the 500k mark it is said that the factory turbo engines have a stronger bottom end but other wise these are a top motor

have heard by quite a few people these 98, 99 model 4.2 in the dx range had lighter weight pistions, smaller gudgeon pins etc, thats why i want to know if the st are the same as well, i dont know, thats why im asking,
ive also been told the earlier gq 4.2 diesels89-94 are better than the later gq from 94 on

by weaker they mean you can only run 12psi on a motor that was normally naturally aspirated, it's closer to a normal engine than the stupid-tough old early gq td42s can handle close to 30 psi with no internal mods even though they weren't supposed to be turbocharged.
the 99 you can still run a "decent turbo setup" you just cant run a "WHAT THE F... have you done to THAT???" turbo setup without opening it up and changing things.
the pistons tend to crack across the crowns when you lean on them, but they will go forever at moderate power and are actually slightly more responsive due to the significantly lower piston mass.
The early GQ ones are good for about 160kW, I had my block crack at a bit over 180rwkw and sustained load running it off the clock. So if you ARE going for v8 killer power around 200rwkw you should start with a factory turbo engine. You can buy new crate TD42Ts from nissan, last I saw the price was still under $10k which isnt a lot when you consider what a performance TD42 rebuild costs.

my 98 DX 4.2L has had a turbo kit fitted for 10 years running 12psi boost. I've now pushed it up to 17psi.... no dramas yet *touch wood*
