:bad-words: :bad-words: :bad-words: I just farkin wrote this out and then had to log on again and it dissapeared :bad-words: :bad-words: :bad-words:

I have an LN106 hilux which is my daily truck. I just pull the rear diff center (4.3 lsd) out due to a vibration it's developed. Theres virtually no movement back and forth through the pinion, and only a small amount in rotation, but a fair bit side to side, and it's pretty clear the carrier bearings are on their last legs. Aside from that everything is in good nick, no tooth damage, very clean, no filings in oil ect.

I've changed cv's, wheel bearings ect before but never tackled a diff, and i'd like to give it a crack myself.

Does anyone have any tips or advice on doing this? Or a link to a decent write-up? I''ve found alot of info on the subject but they all seem to be a complete rebuild, and i get a little lost.

Would I get away with just replacing the carrier bearings, or do I need to go all out?

Cheers, Andy

MKe sure befor you pull apart the 3rd member you can backlash figures and check for tooth contact and meshing. So when you reassemble it's all the same so your C+ P are running in the sane wear patern.

If your going to keel the LSD in it put a extra shim or 2 in the SHIM PACK to tighten the LSD up.

So do i assume from that i cant replace the carrier bearings without completely disassembling the 3rd?

You can leave the pinion in. Just take out the crownwheel and hemisphere Abd replace as so

Hey guys, just pulled the front diff center out of my lux. Have a question or two hoping someone can answer.

1. The wear on the spider gears in the photos, is this too damaged to bother putting back in, or is it an acceptable amount of wear? The photo is taken of the worse area. The teeth on the C&P look in good nick.

2. I know the gears are supposed to be pretty tight, i've indicated in red where there seems to be excessive play. Too much? Rotating the spiders there is only very slight play.

Cheers

Me personally, if you go to All the effort to replace carrier bearings why not change the pinion bearings.

They are put in as a set and you really should change as a set, if the carrier bearings are worn then you are taking a gamble weather the pinion bearings will fail later down the track resulting it having to be pulled out once again and set back up.

For the extra $100 on bearings do it once and do it properly.

Also I would not be reusing them spider gears, either replace with a locker or get another set of spider gears (people usually throw them away when they fit lockers)

Not only that, the pinion turns more than 4 times than the ring gear does..
