Are the battery cables well connected and have decent contact patches to the battery terminals?
Is the winch earthed to the chassis, body, or battery?
If body or chassis, is there good earths also back to the battery from those points?

Sounds like the motor may be kaput, best bet is to get it checked, some times the studs for the cables rotate in the housing causing a small short. They aren't too expensive to repair and new ones are in the $400 range.

I would throw a voltmeter on the motor terminals, and also the battery terminals to see what voltage its getting during a pull.

if they are very different then the wiring between battery and winch is faulty or too small.

if they are within 1-2volts of eachother the problem is probably the winch motor.

struth how do i make sure the studs are in the right spot do they have a marking or something like that on the inside of the housing?

shadow should i check the voltage just while its in operation or should i have it under some strain?

If you open up the motor you should be able to see evidence of an electrical short, spark marks, blackened, etc.
