what gives best bang for buck depends on what you want to use the truck for - if you're into rockcrawling, lockers and gears will get you there. if you want to go mud running, you need power and tyres. decide first what you want the vehicle to be able to do, then we can help you spend your money.

they are an expensive machine to do a big suspension lift on - if you want more that 2" you'll need to drop the front suspension mounts, change to crossover steering (with option for high steer if you feel wealthy), etc etc.

all the engines available in that model are pretty worthless - the 2.4 diesel is gutless but can be spiced up with a turbo fairly cheaply (I have found turbo kits second hand for these motors at wreckers for under $500), the petrols are slow and thirsty too, and any truck 20 years old will probably have well over 200,000km on it so you might need to consider a power plant upgrade as well - it's also likely to have rust problems in the body, and the chassis' are known to be a bit weak and could have cracks in ciritcal areas - check around the front spring hangers (ask Stumpy about his!) what I'm trying to say is, you probably won't save money by doing up an older truck, but it can be very rewarding if you can do a lot of the work yourself, and they can be built into a very capable offroader for not HEAPS of cash.

Ive got a turbo set up to suit a 2.4! Factory set up with everything that is needed!
Just snapped the cam and rocker gear and not going to repair so let me know if your keen on this option!

Ended up getting

n 83 4Runner with a 2.4l turbo diesel 2in lift lots of rust repairs but thats to be expected 31 in tyres so at the moment iam think 3in dump and 2.5 in exhaust and wit and intercooler up front somewhere and try wind a little more boost into it although it not that slow can never hurt to squeeze a bit more grunt

So other than the small power up most of the work will be in tyding it up and some matt black or white to make it look passable

Anyone replaced the fibreglass section on a 4runner before any ideas how much they are worth or should i go for a soft top or something else :)

be careful with winding up the boost on these motors. the factory turbo (toyota CT20) is particularly crappy, it's only good for about 10 - 12 psi max and on the 2.4 its efficiency drops dramatically above about 9psi. also excessive boost on indirect injected diesel motors is a losing battle, a lot of heat is generated squeezing the charge air in and out of the precombustion orifice, so even with intercooling you make a lot of heat with extra boost. 10psi is the upper end of safe for that motor.

boost

yeah most id sqeeze into it would be 10 psi and it would be intercooled before id do that

also does anyone know about fitting latter model turbos say off the 3l td of latter model surfs is it possible/easy and worth the hassle

if you're going to change the turbo, get something better than another toyota - garrett or mitsubishi or just about anything. Phill (slowhilux) is a turbo guru, he could probably point you in the right direction.
