Shackle bolts + bushes

ok,
What do people use for the bolts, high tensile?? what size is needed for the sierra extended shackles and length, I will be using 50x6mm material. I have been told that not to let the thread hit the bushes as it chews them out.(right?)
For the bushes, I have heard people drilling them but does this deteriate(sp) them quicker. I will be using the poly ones as suzuki does not have enough of the rubber ones left.
cheers

Sorry nick but your being a bit unclear. Get bolts that are nylocked so you can keep them loose. The hi tensile bolts seem to rust hella quick making a crap surface for a bush to slide on.
Try to just use the old ones if they arn't to bad.

I used Hi Tensile Bolts that have been chromed with Ni-locks

That sounds about right.
Why not use the originals and replace the nut to nylock?

Old ones are pitted and worn (19 years old). Don't think the orig zook ones are long enough for the new material. As you have said that, might look at stainless ones.
Mainly need what diameter people used for the pins. I should be able to work out length

The originals are no way near as strong, but on a tight budget I guess its an option. But running them loose I prefer something a bit stronger.

Will stainless be strong enough? The bolt will have a fair amount of load on it.
If you're worried about rust why not just apply some brease every now and then.
Personally i would look at high tensile.

I have used high tensile bolts and nylocks with a bit of slack in them. I wouldn't recommend using stainless bolts on a suspension component as it isn't anywhere as strong. It is fine for bolting things together that aren't experiencing huge amounts of variable force like a shackle would

Mild is the go then. Just have to look around for some right length bolts. + rust proof paint / oil.
What diameter is needed for the zook, M12?
cheers

I thought every one said hi tensile with nylocks. Where did mild come from?

OOps, i meant hi-tensile.
Found out stainless gets brittle from another post.

Greasable shackles...
Hard to find over here and they don't make them extended. (I think)

Plus they don't flex and are too expensive to scrape over rocks.

so that's $30.80 for just one shackle not bad as ive seen some like $100 for a pair and they were just greasable not even extended

the originals have a step in them, the part thats inside the bushes is 14mm and the thread is 12mm. Just drill your shackle to 14mm and run a 14mm Class 8 bolt (you know the one with the funny 8.8 thing stamped on the head?) right through it.

Thats not the attitude nicbeer, they may be a bit pricy but 4bing is an expensive sport.
Mine cost $15 for material and $18 for bolts which equals 33 bucks. Let me know when your available and you can come round and check things out. i'll help you make as well if you want.
