Diesel Tacho (VDO) - 1HZ

VDO make tacho's to suit diesel motors, but it says they hook into the alternater "W" (warning light?) terminal. How does the tacho read RPM if the alternater is being driven faster than the crank speed?? Old mate trying to sell me the tacho said that auto electricians can then calibrate the tacho using a hand held tacho, spotting the crank timing mark. Two auto electricians that i spoke to this morning have never heard of or used a hand held tacho. Im yet to speak to a gauge calibration mob, but i get the feeling im being led up the garden path?!

Has ANYONE put a tacho onto a 1HZ, or any diesel that did not have a factory fitted tacho??

Seen a autometer monster tacho in a 75 series. Don't know who or how he got it hooked up but sorry.

May be able to find out if no one else chimes in with more help.

Diesel tachos ARE available. Good workshop should have one.
Most pick up from injection pulse on pipe.

the tacho will not work off the warning light terminal, it will have to be hooked onto one of the phases of the alternator stator. not sure bout calibration but.

have you looked into using a GXL dash with the tacho?

The tacho connects to one phase of the alt. To callibrate it you need to know how many poles are on the rotor and the pully sizes and have a instrument dude to set the tacho to these specs....

The Tacho for any yota diesel runs off a pickup that fits on the back of the fuel pump - picks up a pulse every full revolution - not sure what technology VDO use to make theirs work - but I'm sure this would suffice. A GXL dash may have inbuilt Tacho but you need teh pickup. Trying to clibrate off the alternator is waste of your money and cash into someone else's wallet for no reason.

Have a yarn to your local Yota wrecker about grabbing a look at the back of a 1HZ with a tacho. Otherwise hold onto your wallet and hit the yota dealerhsip.... :D

Im now actually thinking of sh!tcanning the tacho idea for the moment now, as its sounding like it wil be a big PITA to get to work. Im going to stick with an EGT gauge and oil pressure gauge once the turbo gets fitted. Might look into getting a Marks Speedo Unit too, so i know how fast (or slow!) i realy am goin :?
