Cheap winches using rope

Just wondering if anyone knows with the cheap winches that Supercheap, Repco,
Aldi etc sell, that you can safely run the Dyneema rope with them? I'm talkin about a 9500lb 5.5hp ones with the internal drum brake?
I remember reading somewhere that some cannot run the rope because of excess heat build up in the drum? Is that correct?
Thanks
Nayto

Have you had any dramas at all with your winch? Any mods done to it?

nah no real dramas, solenoid crapped out after about 3 years and i replaced it with a solid state. I didnt mount the solid state one well enough when i mounted it to my patrol and the wires ended up contacting and winching in without me realising for i dont know how long, stuffed the motor, replaced it with an ebay one and it still runs fine just a bit noiser.
As i said tho, i havent shown it much respect when winching in the 5 years ive had it, so for the $300 for the winch plus $100 for rope its been a great buy.

freespool out, winch in - no problems.

Try winching backwards any more than about 8-10m and the plastic rope will melt, dropping you to the bottom of whatever you are winching down.

Dyneema melts at 160 odd degrees if I remember correctly.

Another vote for the aldi winch here - I'd run rope on mine and probably will when the wire craps out, just won't be abseiling the 4by with it.
