Outer Limits 4x4 Board

I thought i would post this up here, even though it is about a nissan it could happen on any engine and it has me really puzzled as to whats causing it.

Has anyone had the problem with a td42 or any engine for that matter where the engine labours/stalls when the clutch is pushed in. We originally put it down to the slave cylinder sticking as the throw out bearing was siezed and you could see where it had been wearing on the pressure plate.
So we replaced throw out bearing, pressure plate, friction plate, flywheel, slave cylinder, master cylinder. Also we checked the crank end float and it measured 0.254mm (spec is 0.1-0.4) also you can see that the thrust washers are still intact (although we havent pulled a main cap off yet).
After changing the clutch on first start up the problem still extisted, after pumping the clutch a few times it went away. Then after a short drive it started happening again, not as bad as at first but the engine still labours when you push the clutch in. the throw out bearing is free as you can feel the free play in the fork.
Really puzzled by this now and not really sure what to do next.
Any help would be much appreciated.

sounds like a vacuum leak .. but they are not vacuum assisted ...

the throw out bearing isnt over adjusted.
ive seen it where the throwout bearing was pushing the clutch that much is digging back into the friction plate.

it describes the your situation.

how far down can u depress the clutch pedal before it stalls and how also how far down do u have to press the pedal down to shift gears.

im guessing about a quarter of the way to change gears

Mine is and my old GQ was.

Take the vacuum line off the master cylinder and block the hose with a bolt or fold it and ziptie it then see if it still stalls or labours. sounds like you've replaced everything else.

your thrust bearing/freeplay is set right if you can push the slave cylinder back into itself fairly easy IMO. If you cant you gotta adjust (shorten, IIRC) the pushrod through the firewall to the master cylinder.

From my experience I dont see the thrust bearing having enough "grip" to stall a td42. I had a thrust bearing poo itself and end up wearing its way completely through the pressure plate. It never came close to loading the motor enough to stall it and that was a tb42 with, i'd imagine, significantly less torque than a td42.

its not the thrust bearing that jams it. its the fingers on the pressure plate being bent back into the friction plate that jam.

i have no idea if it could stall a td42, but i have seen it on other engines - smaller and petrol though.

oops been a while since I had my head under a GQ bonnet ...

My first thought was clutch booster but the OP says it's a TD42 and they run a vacuum pump on the alt so a vacuum leak wouldn't affect the idle at all.

all sorted.. was just a dodgy throw out bearing. fingers crossed it all runs smoothly now.

Hopefully your clutch won't get depressed anymore!
