MK Question (rear canopy)

Post by Justin_M »

Hey guys, im looking at getting an MK swb diesel. Ive found one, which appears to be in excellent mechanic condition and the price is definatly right, but the body is a bit tired and in need of a clean up. The main worry to me is the rear canopy do you call it? Well its the later steel type, and has the typical rust under the windows, can i simply buy a fibreglass canopy from an older mq and put it straight on, or is there some kind of mounting difference?

Any other quick hints or tips for things to check?

I'm 99.9% sure that a fibreglass canopy off of a MQ would bolt straight up, if not then its only a matter of "adjusting" the holes in the fibreglass canopy with a drill :D

What to look out for ........ These rigs have a few years on em now and finding ones without rust aint easy.....but they are out there !

Rust spots ( most common )
Cab /Chassis mounts ( under the drivers right foot)
door pillars ( associated with above area)
Sill panels ( near the rear wheel )
Wheel arches ( above rear wheel )
Front radiator support panel (in behind the grill)
Wheel tub ( look from rear wheel to drivers hip )
Rear floor ( back corners to wheel tubs)

Rust spots ( not so common )
front guard ( where it bolts to the sill panel)
Door pillar (associated with above area)
firewall ( where the bonnet closes down to the firewall )
Inner guard to front panel corner brace ( near the batterys)
Battery trays ( under the battery and inner guard area)
Canopy to body ( usually at the rear near the tailgate)
Rear quarters ( usually at the seam and into the wheel tub )
Inner guard to firewall ( usually passengers side mainly)
Inner guard to firewall brace ( drivers side, follow steering shaft )
Windscreen ( under the rubber on the passengers side )
Bonnet hinges ( below and to the side of the hinge)

Rust spots ( rare )
roof to gutter joint ( in the actual gutters and usually passengers side)
Back panel ( underneath the tailgate hinges)
Front wheel well/ firewall ( between the clutch and brake pedels )
headlight frames ( near the outer front guard )
Sunvisor mount ( where the passengers side sunvisor bolts on)

Panel rust
Doors ( along the bottom edge )
Tailgate ( around the hinges and along the bottom edge )
Bonnet ( back corners, in the middle at the back edge, & along the front)

Depends on how bad it is. If its "grown up into the roof itself then is a bit of a job but if its only the gutter at this stage then easy as.

Shoot us some pics :D
