Check the easy things first,

Air filter
Intake restriction
Exhaust restriction

Then look at the fuel screw on the inj pump (faces towards the firewall just above the fuel shutoff solenoid). It may have come loose.

Older engines get what is called governor growth, where the stoppers wear out and allow more throttle and fuel metering.

If everything looks ok, wind the fuel screw out a few degrees and try that. Too much smoke still? Try turning the screw more. If you are having to turn it more than 1/4 a turn back there is something wrong.

as what zoltan said and drop a bottle of injector clean in and take a long drive. check / renew fuel filter,

fuel screw is last on list.
