Ok, to start with the unit is a GME. The problem is that people can only pick me up if they are very close buy, which I mean dirrectly behind me for eg. Past that, they cant hear anything I say. On the other hand I can hear trucks km's away as per normal uhf would.
Now, any ideas on the fix????

The fault discription indicates a blown PA in the rig.
To confirm ( and also to check your antenna), get someone to do a VSWR check. The watt metter will indicate the transmitt power (should be 5 watts), plus confirm where the problem is ( radio or antenna)

i had the same problem so i switched the unit wit a spare one. same prob so i took to an auto electrician they said the arial was faulty and had damaged the trnsmitter part in the radio. so when i got the coin together i had a new uniden one installed, all new wiring arial etc. same problem. the auto electrician that fitted it (a "freind" from our 4x4 club) said we should have checked it before we left and did not supply an instruction booklet for the new unit. now i am stuck 1200 ks away from the prick several hundred $$ out of pocket in the same position i started. any insight to this problem would be greatly appreciated. 
i'd rather push my patrol than drive a buggered toyota!

The problem could be as simple as the grounding of the base of the antenna to the bullbar. Undo the ariel and rub the paint off where the base is to allow better contact and this may help

If the antenna is a GPI ( ground plane independant antenna) you dont need a ground at the antenna.
Usually if you rx some from a great distance indicates that the antenna is probally ok.
Auto elc's are not radio techs (I am), they learn vehicle wiring. Bur RF is differant. A vswr will give some indiation of where the problem is - if its the radio then it needs to goto a tech to repair.
Also check your dc wiring ensyre the cables are good and free from corrosion. The dc voltage to the radio be dropiong and causoing the poor tx.
