02 GU patrol - Clunk in rear??

Hi all,

I have recently bought an 02 GU111 4.8 Auto Patrol.

It has a lovells 2" lift.

When Im slowing to a stop (well nearly stoppeed) theres a clunk from the rear.

It seems as though when braking, something moves, then pops backed when stopped.

SOMETIMES, if I brake really gently itll do it on take off..

Any ideas on what to check?

Thanks Shaun

Upper control arms in the rear have worn bushes.

Ok, you thing it's trans related.
But my GU, and several others I know, have developed the same symptoms.

Ease off from a standing start, gentle on the throttle, somewhere between first and second there's a soft clunk.... You can feel it as much as hear it.

When slowing down gently, it's there again before coming to a stop.

Accelerate or decelerate hard, and it's not there? ( most of the time)

It's the diff rotating slightly under load, and a big chance it's upper control arm bushes.

In neutral, there's no load on the driveshaft transferring back to the diff housing.

I looked at output shaft,, uni's, tailshaft, everything I thought it was.
New arms fixed it.

Theres plenty of blokes with the 4.8s with the same issue and has been recognised by nissan as a transmission design flaw, yes it can be your rear arms but it can also be other things think outside the square :)

Easy to check. Get some one to sit in the drivers seat, foot on brake. And get them to change between D and R.
While you are lying down infront of the back wheels looking up at the top trailing arms on the rear suspension. On my SWB GQ it was very easy to see them moving. Might need a torch.
And as long as you dont have a after market aux fuel tank, there very easy to take out and reinstall. Just only do one at a time.

Well,

I went to 2 suspension places today and they completely checked it over. Nothing to be found, all good.

Any ideas from here???

Someone mentioned an additive for the trans, anyone know what one to use????

Thanks

I have had the same prob it turned out to be the rear diff oil, causing the LSD to suddenly "release". the fix was an additive to smooth up the friction discs the product i used was from holden ask for LSD oil additive it wont hurt the LSD . This is only if you dont already have a locker! ( could be a good time to fit a locker )!!

I have recently changed the diff oil to a penrite LSD oil, no change to clunk. I wounder what effect it would have if I banged in some additive also.......

What brand of oil was in the diff before you changed it ? only that if it was penrite changing the oil changes nothing ! just a thought .
