Variable Vane Turbo

i have "acquired" a variable vane turbo off the v8 landcruiser diesel, and want to put it onto my 4.2 diesel (as soon as i get one). My issue is that it didnt come with the controller that sits on the housing. Im not that mechanically minded, and not too sure how it works. Does anybody know if there another way of controlling it, as Toyota doesnt sell the controllers without the whole turbo. Cheers.

Use a boost actuator directly hooked up to manifold pressure.

Are they easy to get? Not too sure where to look for one, Do you know an approximate price? I guess im trying to weigh up the options of using this turbo against a standard kit. I understand the standard kit is going to be a cheaper option, but think the 'Cruiser one will work better. Would love to hear any thoughts people may have. Cheers, Flea.

You really need to get someone else to install and set it it up properly for you.

300winmag, I have every intention of getting somebody else to set it up. Thought I could get some advice on the turbo, and its benefits over a standard unit. If I can save a few bucks here and there sourcing parts, why not?

i wouldnt worry about wasting the money or time with the vane turbo from a cruiser, you wont get the benefits of having the vane its electronically controlled which is done from the cruiser management systems. youll need all the sensors that signal the module and the emu to control the vane pitch and speed on the turbo otherwise the vanes will be set in one position without anything else to tell them they need to move they wont. would be better to get the 2863 or a kit turbo for the patrol.

boost controllers for VNT turbos can be purchased from 3Bar racing in the USA for the cheapest prices. The installation is pretty straight forward and in fact a gut called CHAZ has diagrams of a single 'sawes valve' as they are known and a dual dawes valve setup on the web. Just google CHAZ and 3Bar racing and dawes valve.
