time has come to do the clutch in my GQ wagon, 4.2 diesel.
when i purchased the car i noticed the firewall had been bashed in on each side beside the bellhousing, i have repaired the dints as they were right on the seam causing leaks through the floor.
i have heard that belting the firewall in necessary to remove the box with the engine in the car to change the clutch, can anyone shed some light on this please?
i had a look through the bible and couldnt find anything, and the search doesnt work so if it has been covered before im sorry. dont cry just keep trolling
helpful replies would be much appreciated though

shouldn't have to on a gq, I've done them before without any bashing. My old GU however wasn't even getting close without some serious bashing

Its just a redneck way of doing it rather than loosening exhaust bolts and engine mounts etc. to let the back of the motor drop down to access those bolts.

If the car has a body lift the gearbox will come out easy and shouldn't require any belting
No body lift and you may have to massage the floor a bit to clear the starter motor hump and allow you to rotate the gearbox and get it out
Its also a lot easier with a hoist. If doing it on the ground its a lot easier to pull the motor out

Just be careful, you NEED a serious transmission jack. the TD42 box is more than heavy enough to kill you.

Gearbox can be removed easly using an engine crane through the drivers door and in through the gear lever hole. I've managed this on my own. No smashing the floor pan required.

That's exactly what I did when I put a new clutch in my truck. Just be careful when you lift it back up that the arm on the engine crane doesn't hit the rear vision mirror.
