TD42 with TD42. What TD42?

I have a couple of questions.

I own a 2000 gu turbo td42 thats been tricked up a bit but std turbo remains. The motor has done 340,000 k's and has a water leak from behind the front plate (the plate the injector pump bolts to) and the rear main is pooing itself.

I figure it will be easier and cheaper to source a new motor, replace the old, fix the old and sell it.

I would like to know what particular td42 to replace it with and where to source it?

Who does a rebuilt motor for people like me?

I would like a bolt in (aka std airbox, snorkle, rad and dual batteries) 120 +- 10 kw atw version built sit on 2500-3000 rpm all day in the heat of the NT but the problem is theres no diesel tuners i would trust here. Is that even possible and do you really need to dyno tune the motor in the car?

Would balancing and ceramic coated stuff be necessary at the 120kw mark?

Some rough prices of motors would be good too, just so i know where im at.

I've pretty much send this post as a PM to swaffie but havent seen him around for a while.

Opinions please..

rebuild the motor you have. you say its a factory turbo motor, the 2000 model has the biggest of factory fuel pumps. MTQ stage 2 turbo kit, JPC garret replacement or northside 4x4 replacement turbos with a good intercooler will give you 120kw reliably. Standard turbo motors are making 180rwk tricked up but thats a sound motor so Ceramic coating pistons would be nice but not necessary. If your going to get a crank grind you may aswell balance it aswell.

I always reckon its better the devil you know.
If you have looked after the engine then it could be a better choice for rebuild than someone elses POS thats been abused.

Why not just fix the leaks and it should be good for another 10 years. A bucket load cheaper.

I figured pulling the motor out and replacing it myself i would end up with a fresh rebuilt motor for not much more (after i sell the original motor) than it would cost for me to get the leaks done. I wont pull another nissan gearbox out again and I dont trust any mechanics in the nt!

So the 2000 model is the best motor? I just want a bulletproof motor that'll cope with the high speeds in the heat up here. a gen 3 would probably suit me better but i really need to stick with the diesel.

edit: I cant afford to have the car off the road for the amount of time it takes to rebuild the motor i have

Dont bother gen3 never going to be reliable as a td42. If you do purchase a rebuilt motor, make sure its a factory turbo motor. They mostly sell with out accessories so transfer your fuel pump and the rest over, get a decent intercooler kit and highflow turbo. You dont need a dyno to tune but its nice to have. If you have a pyro meter set your boost to 16-18psi, turn the fuel up until it hits no more then 600degrees post turbo max effort up a hill. You will have a reliable donk all day.

Recond, but who knows what el cheapo parts have gone into it

Second hand with all accessories

I cant see how getting the leaks fixed would be cheaper than a reco engine. And if you didnt like removing the gearbox, you probably wont like taking the engine out. They are plenty heavy.
Heres and option: get a quote from someone reputable , say in Darwin or Adelaide, to fix the leaks, bung in a new clutch while its open, tuned or turbo upgrade. Go on a holiday there grab a hire car for a couple of days while your getting the job done.
Probably have change for a rub and tug with happy ending, over a reco job
Just a thought

cheers for the replies. you are making good points. I didnt say it would be cheaper though. Its was just the way I could have the best of everything eg. a reputable engine builder from interstate, a better version of the td42 (if there is one), with the least amount of time off the road and safe power. If it ends up costing 3,4,5k after selling the old motor then so be it. thats the cost of a basic rebuild but without the wait.

Well it makes sense in my head anyway.

I know $500 sounded a bit high, but it was an offer for the whole car. (even with the skippy bent tie rods and stuff!)
