there was less problems after 2003. however to be sure it won't cark it, get the common rail version.

There was a guy on patrol 4x4 called Whitepatrol or Whitiepatrol or something. He has done heaps on them over the years & has some really good info. He did drop off the site at one stage as bogged was giving him a hard time but then he was banned so he may be back. I have not been there since the Pedestrian Protection standard flare up where people were being duped into thinking it is a bullbar ban.
The big consensu seems to be, the Common rail ones are prett reliable although the fuel consuption was not as stated, mos people run a pyro to keep an eye on exhaust temps especially when towing, block the EGR to protect No4 cylinder (although this is a petential defect if found out) & run some sort of boost controller so they dont overboost.
By all reports the engine is fairly solid if the cylinder temps & boost is kept under control. A lot of people have modded them for more power.
I would have bought one if I didnt buy the Pathfinder as they were cheaper. The Pathfinder is more family friendly, goes better & better in day to day use but damn I miss my live axles...........

The 2003 and onwards ZD30s haven't had as many issues as the early ones.
Check out NADS and Dawes valves on patrol4x4.com to see how easy is is to make them more reliable and better to drive.
A Dawes valve is the best $35 you can spend on a 3L Patrol.
