BJ42 rear diff just went bang.

Like the subject says, I think my diff just went pop.

To be honest it was probably worn out and was going to happen sooner rather than later. Long and the short of it is I need a new centre and was wondering what my options are. The car has an ARB locker fitted by the previous owner and I'd like to keep that if I can.

Any suggestions welcomed and thanks in advance.

Should've easy as pie.pull apart and inspect. Find out what diff ratio you have. And buy a new 1 if required with a install kit. Should be 9.5(don't quote me)

Locker "should" be fine but will More then likely need a new coper line as that'll properly be damaged.

Rebuild it the. Install

find a 60 diff drum to drum and throw that under.. center and ratios are most likely the same but you gain 3" in width.. minor task to adjust the spring perches but well worth the effort in off-road-ability.. alternatively you could use a 75 diff which can come with rear disk's.. again the spring perches will need to be relocated.. you can use the diff center from the 75 too and unless you're running 35, your diff ratio is still 4.11 and will be pretty common

Thanks for the responses, all good info that gave me something to think about.

I finally had a chance today to pull the centre out and have a good look. I knew things weren't too good when the oil coming out looked like metallic paint and the drain plug had silver sludge on it.

It looks like the carrier bearing has failed and the rollers have done a little bit of damage. Fortunately, w the bearing failing meant the ring gear was able to move and the rollers haven't done too much damage to the ring gear. The pinion has a few chips in it, but I think it should be ok.

The plan is too get a quote to replace the bearings and check it over and take it from there. Failing that a replacement centre is on the cards.

Replacement gearsets are cheap, not worth the hassle of risking another failure because you reused damaged parts. Either find a good 2nd hand centre to steal the CW&P from or just buy new.

If the gears are chipped normally its a throw way type job, you get a hydraulic effect where oil get trapped in crack/chip and gears try to compress it and it continues to break gears... Not to mention a weak spot..

As said above get new gears or new centre..
