Definitely not.

Takin a pic now of the two and the differences.

The 4.2 is HUGE in comparision to the 2.8

2.8 box is made of alloy. and its simliar to a 300zx gearbox with a transfer case.

the 4.2 is a fat turkey compared to it.

Pics in 5 mins.

As you can see above.. the bellhousings are different sizes.

The smaller of the 2 being the 2.8 gerabox.

Speak to Mr Clutch (www.whitepages.com.au) about your cluch system It may be about to fail, and get a solid flywheel and clutch setup 30 percent stronger i believe. approx 900 to 1000 dollars.

In regards to your gearbox problem. i am not too sure as mine went to 260,000 kays without dramas until i removed it due to burnt clutch and replaced with a 4.2 engine and gearbox. Try sythetic oil perhaps with some gear additive. 300zx gearboxes i believe are identical and some research in there if you can to see if its a direct replacement with your parts (transfercase, bellhousing etc bolted on)???

Hope this helps mate..

Probalby the factory 4.6's. If you're runnin 35's the recommended gears would be 5.1s  To date the most avilable aftermarket gearings would be the 4.8s...

Thus the reason for my changeover of the 2.8 into the 4.2.. gearing issues. as i want to go bigger

Hard to shift cold is known as Cold Baulk.
Quite often a change of oil will rectify this problem.
Some vehicles used to use auto fluid in their manuals to fix this.
A good quaility 5speed g/box oil ie Castrol Syntrans should do it.
