Would you turbo charge your 4.2 GQ or put a V8 in it for comp work and why.

Petrol or diesel?
I think most comps tend to favour lots of horsepower, might be better to go an 8, but might be a bit more expensive to get legal that a turbo'd petrol 4.2?
I imagine the 8 would be more reliable too, probably an important factor.

theres more potential from a V8, so id go a chevy 383.
theres alot less stuffing around putting a turbo on. if you go turbo, put it on straight gas. (or V8 for that matter, mmm gas)

Mmmm gas, perfect for barbeques and forklifts
do it once, do it right - EFI

I am already running straight gas but I am going to put a fuel tank in for the cape and outback challenge.I am leaning towards turbo like you say less stuffing around and most likly cheaper.200 2 240 KW,s is the most that I would need.CHEERS.

Don't want to sound like a knocker or negative, but I think that gas and turbo's might be a bit of a nightmare for a 4WD application. I think that the full cost of a turbo installation for efi would be beter spent on an 8 to make the power with much lower stress and better off idle torque.

its alot easier to setup a gas/turbo engine rather than a gas/efi one. (especially when its already straight gas)
plus gas wont detonate as soon, so you can run a bit more boost.
but be warned, your engine will run hotter with the turbo, gq's already run pretty hot. for the OBC youd wanna pretty good cooling system.

Some good points.I will continue doing my homework. The turbo 6's seem to have that good rev range with good power output.I am only trying to make sure that I make the right decission with proof to back it up before I fork out the dosh.CHEERS.

i'm in the same boat, and am focusing on a lt1 corvette 350 (had one before and i swear by them). might run a turbo 750 or similar as it costs the same roughly for the swap and i have duel transfers so down hills arn't a problem

. doing the outback next year so i want reliable hp. thinking of running a holley 4x4 carb setup (my tb42 is inj now) for reliability. fuel consumption dosen't bother me. looking at under $5500 installed for a crate motor (sell mine). also have you ever heard of a install and drive turbo install? way too much effort. reliability drops too. legals/insurance the same aswell
cheers
