Biggest coils I can fit without extending bump stops?

Looking at 3 and 4 inch Dobinson coils at my local retailer. He cant tell me if I will need to extend the bump stops. I reckon there must come a point where the spring will bind on compression before the bump stop does its thing. I assume this depends on the diameter of the coil wire as well as the number of turns?
I dont want to extend the bump stops as this is obviously going to reduce compression travel.
Any thoughts or comments on different springs?

Also shock compressed length will have bearing on this too.
loose rule of thumb, allow 1/3 bumpstop length before shock starts to bottom, maybe more if stop soft.
For spring multiply no of coils by wire thickness to give bind height. Take about 20mm off to be safe.
If you buy a complete kit ARB, TJM etc, this should of been done for you.

and ARB, TJM kit would be nice but not everyone loves paying through certain body parts to obtain "off the shelf" - "Bolt-on-Bandit" style lift kits...q's and emails are far cheaper.
Firstly are you extending the bump stops purely to stop coil bind or are you chasing "legal" requirements?? Anyways hang on....what da fuck are you buying the coils from a local retailer??? and not direct...you do know they have all da specs and what not for patrols, landcruisers, etc - even including if you have acc. like a winch, bigger gas tanks, steel bullbars and a FAT missus in the passenger seat. I have changed my ride height several times on my current vehicle n a four inch and over you really need to change bump stops...however I didn't - thats why they invented swaybar extensions....
