after some steering help please.

91 4runner standard power steering (i think) that is tough to turn after the front end is wet. it doesn't do it when the steering get wet due to rain only when gernieing or going though big puddles that come over the wheels.

after having a look at the power steering fluid it is full so i am thinking that the next step is replacing the standard steering damper.

any advice on if i may be looking in different places would be great

if it is the damper and i need a replacement, is it worth investigating a RTC damper or is that a waste of money on a car that does mainly road kms

cheers mark

Mate it's the power steering belt getting wet and slipping would be the most likely cause

this

check if your pulley is worn out and the belt is bottoming out in the pulley, doesnt squal as loud or at all when its doing this which makes it hard to tell its slipping.

the pulley will be polished in the bottom of the V and must be replaced.

could be either the crank or pump pulley

I opened the resivour lid while the engine was running and I could see that there was still fluid flowing. If it was slipping would I still see that happening?

yes but maybe not as much fluid flowing, its slipping but still turning just not putting out the full pressure needed to turn the box

The belt will probably only slip when the system is under load (when you're steering).

Found the problem. The belt was slightly looser that it should be and was causing the slip while wet

Thanks for the advice though
