Just had the head redone been back on the road now for 3 weeks and a metallic whine started coming from engine bay. Checked all fluid levels and everything is as it should be so assumed it was a noisy pulley.

Pulling into work today I noticed and have had it commented before that there was a knock noise and the whine had gone. This knock is erratic and increases with engine rpm and only seems to turn up after a period of driving. (It's a half hour drive to work at freeway speeds.)

Does this sound right. My best guess is a collapsed / collapsing bearing on the belt tensioner.

Will be looking at it some more when I get home just after the general best guess of the outers collective.

Update 1 didn't do it coming home today at all and I purposely drove it harder home to try and make it happen again. This morning it did it while driving and while at a standstill I should add

Are you sure it's coming from the front. If its erratic it could be a bearing has spun. I had the same thing happen to an old 2.8 and yes I know apples and oranges. But the principle is the same. A reworked head will put more stress on the bottom end in my experience. How many ks on the motor in general.

We might need a bit more information to help you with this one, if you can get it to do it again listen to see if it coming from outside or inside the engine. A long screwdriver on the tappet cover and put your ear to the handle will quickly determine if it from inside the engine.
